Clean Water Projects

Access to clean drinking water is a human right and essential to health and well-being. Many rural villages in Bolivia, however, have no such access and are forced to utilize open-water sources that are contaminated by mining operations and other environmental pollutants. GMEF works with the local government of Bolivian communities to supply safe, sustainable water sources to rural villages.

Adequate sanitation infrastructure is critical to human health and dignity, protects local water sources from contamination, and reduces the spread of disease. GMEF works collaboratively with rural communities to construct sustainable bathroom and sanitation facilities in homes and schools. GMEF provides guidance and construction materials and the communities work together to build the bathrooms--projects that participants are proud of for many years to come.

The death of mothers devastates a family in the present and for generations to come. Preventable maternal mortality is high in the rural regions of Bolivia and GMEF works with the Ministry of Health to tackle the most common causes. We work to train and equip healthcare staff in obstetric and neonatal emergency management including the prevention and treatment of postpartum hemorrhage, preeclampsia, and other birth complications, and train staff in the basics of neonatal resuscitation. We use the Helping Mothers Survive and Helping Babies Breath training programs created by Jhpiego (Johns Hopkins University) and the American Academy of Pediatrics. GMEF supports facilities striving to meet the International Childbirth's 12 standards of Safe and Respectful MotherBaby-Family Maternity Care by providing equipment, supplies, training, and ongoing support.

Women

Health education at the community level is crucial for improving short- and long-term outcomes of families. GMEF collaborates with the Ministry of Health to train young women from rural villages to support the health of themselves, their families, and their communities. Each participant is sponsored to attend monthly health training workshops hosted by their local health centers for two to three years. The program provides educational and empowerment opportunities to women with little access to either and equips them to become trusted resources for their communities.

Supporting the health and well-being of women is the cornerstone of a healthy society. GMEF works with the Bolivian Ministry of Health to address critical gaps in women's healthcare including cervical cancer prevention and contraceptive access.

Cervical cancer is one of the leading causes of preventable deaths for the women of Bolivia. GMEF provides the training and equipment healthcare providers need to offer cervical cancer screening and preventative treatment through community-based women's health campaigns.

Many women in Bolivia have limited access to contraceptive options and GMEF offers the training and supplies health center staff need to offer these critical services to the women of rural Bolivia, whose access to reproductive healthcare has diminished significantly due to COVID-19-related reductions in women's healthcare spending.

Train medical care providers and support health facilities to meet the standards of safe and respectful maternity care put forth by the International Childbirth Initiative.
Make reproductive health care services including cervical cancer screening and prevention and access to contraceptives available by partnering with the Ministry of Health to equip health centers with the necessary supplies, resources, and training.

We have an operating budget of about $50,000 per year which is invested directly in operating all of the programs discussed above. The organization's founder and executive director are experienced perinatal care providers (a physician and a midwife) with experience training healthcare staff in obstetric emergency skills, community-based health care, and quality improvement initiatives. All working members of the team are fluent in Spanish and two are fluent in Spanish and Quechua the native language of many of the rural families GMEF serves. We have extensive history and working relationships with members of the Ministry of Health in dozens of regions of Sud Chichas Bolivia, where our work is focused. We partner with them to assess and meet the needs of their staff and the communities they serve.

In the rural regions of Bolivia we have:
Launched community health worker training programs in two regions with a total of 105 participants over three years.
Funded and overseen the construction of bathrooms benefiting 1819 families and 786 students.
Trained 312 traditional midwives in lifesaving perinatal care skills.
Trained 1896 medical professionals in obstetric emergency care.
Provided clean water sources to 1397 families.
Donated 2113 long-acting reversable contraceptive devices.
Trained 37 medical staff in obstetric ultrasound use and donated 17 portable ultrasound machines.
Equipped 29 birth centers with the supplies needed for safe deliveries.
Constructed 5 birth centers and equipped them with all the supplies needed for safe deliveries.
Donated 11 thermocoagulators and trained 191 providers in their use to prevent cervical cancer.
