What we aim to solve
When looking at images from the slums in which CDA-Conviventia work, the first thoughts that probably come to mind are misery, despair, lack, ruin, dirt, disease... brokenness. The dusty unpaved roads, rundown shacks, open sewage, and garbage accumulated in too many places, most probably lead people to believe such thoughts and assign these communities the label of ‘poor’. It is true, all these communities lack many things necessary to guarantee a decent life. Many of the inhabitants don’t have even the most basic of needs met. However, behind the image of poverty and brokenness, there is an enormous richness. Yes, as you look closer and walk the streets, go behind the doors, you discover a different reality. One that is made in God’s image. One with capacity, talents and dreams. One that smiles in the midst of adversity, and knows literally how to dance in the rain! All we have to do is to create opportunities to spread the hope of God to transform everyones lives.
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Child Protection
Successful child protection begins with prevention. Therefore, CONVIVENTIA supports the creation of protective environments, where girls and boys are free from violence, exploitation, and unnecessary separation from family. We work in securing a protective environment, within the family. Our efforts address social norms and traditions that generate injurious practices, consider training of those who are in contact with children, and facilitate children’s access to acquiring life skills and knowledge that enable their participation as actors in their own protection, promoting also the engagement of civil society.
We believe that families play a crucial part in preparing children for life in society. In complex and changing societies, it is necessary to support families in fulfilling their functions. With a focus on family counseling and strengthening, this program increases the understanding of parents and caregivers of the physical, psychological, sexual and cognitive development of infants, children and
young people.
Through the School for Parents non-violent relationships and non-violent forms of discipline and problem-solving are promoted, while addressing gender stereotypes; increasing parents and caregivers knowledge toward securing greater access to social protection, and providing psychological and spiritual care to those families who have been victimized, assaulted or compromised.
Community Development
CONVIVENTIA engages in community development; a form of development that takes place within the community and occurs as the result of a new attitude, in which the people become actors rather than recipients. It is not something that we do for those in need, but it is what happens when people discover together new possibilities for their lives. When they realize what they have, individually, and as neighbors. Our Community Development program is based on walking alongside the people and building relationships with and among them, training, advising and creating new opportunities for the communities to learn skills and thus, develop the ability to act together.
Education
Aware that the level of education and income of one generation highly influences the conditions of life which the next generation will be able to achieve, Conviventia and its member organizations contribute to breaking the intergenerational cycle of poverty, decrease the risk of different types of abuse, and promote social cohesion, by promoting and supporting efforts that ensure children and youth’s access to a Christian education that empowers them as individuals, to perform with responsibility, productivity and solidarity in their community and today’s world.
Conviventia’s founding member, CDA, has developed and continues to strengthen an innovative educational model, striving to respond effectively to the needs of children and youth in impoverished areas of Colombia. “School with a Purpose” is developed under the theory of the Transformational School, linking learning to students’ everyday life, promoting an effective engagement of family, school and community. Students are empowered to think analytically and build knowledge, increasing their capacity to become generators of innovative change, that will in turn, positively contribute to the transformation of their social and cultural reality.
Income Generation
Rooted in our values and principles, Conviventia and its founding members focus on helping people trapped in material poverty, to work and support themselves and their families, with the fruit of their work.
We believe, without a doubt, that promoting entrepreneurship and generating employment opportunities, providing people the knowledge and tools necessary to create wealth, is fundamental to successfully alleviate poverty.
The Income Generation program supports the provision of opportunities to individuals from impoverished communities, providing access to vocational education, promoting micro-enterprise development and job placement, moving dependent individuals to self-sustaining productive people.
Basic Needs
Supporting healthy and stable communities is an essential aspect for achieving sustainable development.
Several Projects will be supported under this program, aimed at facilitating the process of strengthening extremely vulnerable communities (poor, very poor, and displaced) through the provision of relief services, while offering integrated social services designed not only to meet fundamental needs, but empower individuals, families and communities toward improved conditions of life.
Conviventia will support efforts in the specific areas of Health Promotion and Disease prevention, ensuring people living in situations of risk, have access to health services, decent housing and food.

What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
It is the dignity of each human being behind the broken neighborhoods that inspired CDA-Conviventia to reach out and invest in equipping individuals and families with adequate schools, training centers and daycares. Conviventia is enabling access to services that will alleviate the immediate need, but most importantly, will train the mind, touch the heart and equip and prepare each individual to take responsibility for their own life. Working from the individual to the collective sphere, we pave the way for a sustainable transformation!
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
Conviventia´s Theory of Change can be described as a process through which we contribute to achieving the sustainable transformation of individuals living in poverty. Considering the multifaceted and multidimensional characteristics of poverty, we lead people to participate in processes that will enhance their capability to take on responsibility for their own development, with a clear understanding of their identity and purpose in this world.
Conviventia identifies both the assets and needs of the populations in the micro-regions where it focuses its action and considers the views and interest of all stakeholders, implementing programs that respond to national and local development plans, ensuring that the efforts carried out contribute to achieving a lasting improvement in the lives of those served.
The mission of the organization is walked out through the five program areas of Education, Income Generation, Family and Leadership Strengthening and Basic Needs.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
CONVIVENTIA builds upon over twenty-three years of continual fieldwork, responding to the needs, challenges and opportunities of destitute families in Latin America. Through this work, the building blocks of a systematic approach to poverty alleviation have been established, focusing on empowering individuals to transform their mindset, regain their dignity and attain self-sufficiency.
Conviventia has developed and continues to strengthen an innovative educational model, responding to the needs of children and youth in impoverished areas of Colombia. “School with a Purpose” links learning to students’ everyday life, promoting an effective engagement of family, school and community. The model focuses on leading the children to discover their identity and sense of worth, strengthen thinking skills, build knowledge, develop abilities, and discover new methods, techniques and spaces, that will enable them to live a life with ‘purpose’.
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
Annual Report Metrics 2022:
EDUCATION
• 3455 children enrolled in the God is Love schools.
• 100% of graduates had secured post graduate education.
• Only 4% dropped out of school
• 530 teachers training in the "God is Love" pedagogical model
• 44 scholarships granted for tertiary education.
FAMILY & LEADERSHIP STRENGTHENING
• 2825 counseling services were provided to parents and families.
• 2600+ people trained in discipleship movement
• 286 people were trained in student, family and community leadership. (50% increase from last year)
• 840 people received the gospel of good news in their hearts
• Over 63 families in crisis situations received assistance.
INCOME GENERATION
• Over 840 students were enrolled in vocational training.
• 920 people were successfully linked to a job.
• 1280 people were trained in soft skills to assist in employment efforts
• 784 people were supported in their entrepreneurship efforts.
• Over 800 companies were strengthened in their business services.
HUMANITARIAN AID
• 3100 people served through different program areas.
• 2240 services through the school health plan.
• 600 individuals given economic given nutritional aid
• 10 health brigades were undertaken.
