Our programs

What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

STEM Design Build Sail

Utilizing a program developed and implemented by US Sailing, sailing is used as a vehicle to teach middle and high school students the elements of STEM education. In addition, in coordination with the Lake Pontchartrain Basin Foundation, these students are introduced to the environment in which our community exists. The program is open to all adolescents.

Population(s) Served

Crew to Captain is a three-year maritime career development program that helps high school students to identify potential pathways to careers in the local maritime industry. At the completion of the program, in addition to having learned about different maritime careers, students will earn their Sailing Instructor Certification, a Louisiana Safe Boating License, Basic Keelboat Certification, and CPR/First Aid training. We encourage graduating students to return as paid part-time instructors with Community Sailing. Leaders from the local maritime industry attend classes as speakers and mentors. By introducing high schoolers to the vast opportunities in the maritime industry, they are better prepared to pursue these career paths, which can lead to greater economic stability and a stronger local workforce
