Horse Emergency Evacuation

HEET is a non-profit, public service organization comprised of volunteers trained to evacuate and shelter horses during a disaster in San Luis Obispo, upper Santa Barabara and lower Monterey Counties.
HEET is an active member of VOAD, Volunteer Organizations Active in Disaster, working with the Red Cross and other public service groups throughout San Luis Obispo County. HEET is the designated lead agency for SLO County Emergency Operations for Animal Services. HEET is a non-profit, public service organization comprised of volunteers trained to evacuate and shelter horses during a disaster. HEET serves all of San Luis Obispo County, as well as northern Santa Barbara County. Our primary focus is wildfires, which pose the greatest threat to large animals in our area. HEET also provides on-call assistance to law enforcement on large animal incidents, including highway-related events such as loose animals and trailer mishaps, as well as the transportation and temporary sheltering of abandoned or abused animals. To better facilitate an evacuation, HEET also provides a horse registry for horse owners.
HEET provides training for both our members and other interested
equestrians several times each year to better prepare the equine community in the event of an emergency. Classes include trailer handling/safety, Cal Fire's Incident Command System, fire safety, HEET evacuation procedures, equine first aid, human first aid/CPR, and more. Regular training assures we work effectively as a team in dangerous conditions and coordinate with other agencies to accomplish a successful evacuation.
