What we aim to solve

SOURCE: Self-reported by organization

On the U.S./Mexico border region surrounding El Paso, Texas, there is great economic need and social distress related to poverty, immigration, drug trafficking and scarcity of resources. YLM promotes health wellness and opportunity for individuals and families on both sides of the U.S./Mexico border, providing programs that address Food, Heath, Shelter, Education, and Spiritual needs.

What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

Food and Hot Meals

Groceries that are combined into food baskets are distributed to individuals and families every week. Also aproximately 5,000 hot meals are served at three locations (one in El Paso, TX, USA and two in Ciudad Juarez, Chihuahua, Mexico) each year. Indigent and low income families are recipients of the program. At one site-in Mexico, 80-120 children are served a meal every Wednesday. The Hot Meal Program's purpose is to alleviate hunger. Meals are prepared from scratch by volunteers.

The outward problems of economics, academics, and society are intertwined with the inner turmoil of troubled hearts and conscience, which are addressed through the spiritual care provided by partner churches and staff equipped for spiritual counseling. YLM partners with Christian churches and missions so that people can receive spiritual care in addition to care for body and mind. People are not required to attend any church in order to receive general economic help, but the opportunity to grow in faith is appreciated by and helpful to many. YLM provides staff support and grants to 1 church in El Paso, TX, USA and 9 missions and churches in the state of Chihuahua Mexico.

YLM enables the children and youth of families that struggle economically by providing more than a thousand school supply kits (backpacks filled with school and hygiene supplies) every year. Financial, scholarship assistance is provided to about twenty children and youth in Ciudad Juarez, Chi., Mexico who would have to drop out in order to work or care for younger siblings rather than complete their education.

Charting impact

Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.

YLM provides assistance that addresses immediate needs such as food, school supplies, home repairs, which can often cause people to lose jobs, end their educational path, or pursue criminal solutions to their struggle. Programs support education for children and youth so that students can stay in school and be successful, opening up opportunities for employment and entrepreneurism.
