What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

My First Pair of Shoes

We primarily serve the Dominican Republic and Haiti where roughly 50% of the children don't own a pair of shoes. We provide shoes to children to avoid disease and to enable them to go to school. You can't attend school without shoes and a uniform

Population(s) Served
Children and youth
Non-adult children

Bringing agriculture back to areas that have lost their top soil due to deforestation brought on by the charcoal trade in Haiti

Population(s) Served
Adults

We are trying to help the ever growing population of street kids in the Dominican Republic.

The locals call them “Palomos,” a Spanish word for “dove.” The slang definition translates to rascals, pests or nuisances. Others simply call them “niños de la calle,” or street children.
Palomos have no legal status. Public authorities don’t attempt to count them, and there are very few public services available to them.

They are easily lured into the sex trade by predators that use them to satisfy sex tourists from Europe or North America. The Police do their best to stop this practice but there just isn’t enough manpower.

None of these street kids go to school and the outlook for their future is bleak. Many never see adulthood

AmeriHand is working in conjunction with the CDDH (El Comité Dominicano de Los Derechos Humanos) (The Dominican Commission on Human Rights) to do something positive to get these kids off the street and give them a fighting chance.

Together, we are using the national past time (Baseball) as a catalyst to get the kids off the streets at night and away from the predators . As well as dormitories to give them a safe place to sleep at night.

Population(s) Served
Children and youth

AmeriHand is trying to protect vulnerable pregnant women and children from mosquito borne disease. Mainly Dengue fever and Zika caused by the Aedes Aegypti mosquito.
One of our main goals is education. we will reach out to provide information to pregnant women with information and educational materials on Zika. We will also be making mosquito nets and repellent contain DEET available to those in danger. We will be working diligently to protect pregnant women from the zika virus.

Population(s) Served
Women and girls
Infants and toddlers
