What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

Big Brothers/Big Sisters Association initiatives:

Community-Based Mentoring-Identified children are matched to adult volunteers. Volunteers eighteen and over are recruited, screened and supervised. Children referred to our agency are living in single-parent households or two parent families challenged by poverty, illness or unemployment. They may be lonely, have low self-esteem or making a poor social adjustment.

School-Based Mentoring- Children referred by the parent/guardian or teacher meet one afternoon a week during the school year with volunteer mentors for support and guidance. These children are experiencing difficulties with social, emotional or academic adjustment in school. The program utilizes high school and college students to serve as mentors to elementary and middle school students.

Counseling- All enrolled clients and their families are eligible to receive counseling services through their caseworker. Some services are short term and in response to request for assistance with either a family, work, financial, or school related crisis. The caseworker may also serve as a mediator or advocate for the client in dealing with schools or other service providers. Other clients may receive ongoing assistance to help decrease stress or family conflicts. Our philosophy is that maintaining a stable family environment enhances the success of a match.
