Hoosier Hills Food Bank, Inc.

aka HHFB   |   Bloomington, IN   |  www.hhfoodbank.org

Mission

HHFB represents a six county service area that includes some of the poorest counties in Indiana by multiple standards. Support for the Hoosier Hills Food Bank does not solely benefit one organization or program, but rather nearly 100 agencies that feed hungry people through food pantries, soup kitchens, youth programs, senior centers, homeless shelters and residential programs including domestic violence shelters, group homes and addiction recovery houses. Having enough to eat is everyone's basic right.

Our programs

What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

Each week, a small staff and many generous volunteers are able to make over 30,000 pounds of food available to more than 85 non-profit feeding organizations. These agencies collectively feed more than 25,000 individuals each year.

Food is collected locally from several avenues. Local retailers such as Kroger and Bloomingfoods give perishable foods such as bread, produce, and milk that are damaged or dated, but still edible, on a daily basis. Our Meal Share program collects prepared food from local restaurants and cafeterias which is repacked into family-sized portions, frozen, and then made available to our member agencies who get it into the hands of those in need.

One of our most important sources of nutritious foods are local food drives. Over 150 community food drives keep the shelves of our member agencies stocked thoughout the year.

As a member of America's Second Harvest-The Nation's Food Bank Network, HHFB has access to great quantities of food donated from national corporations. Members of the ASH network "bid" on loads and pay transportation costs to have the food delivered to their food bank.

HHFB distributes food through two USDA programs as well, The Emergency Food Assistance Program (TEFAP) and the Commodity Supplemental Food Program (CSFP) as well.

Support for our programs comes from a variety of sources. Gifts from Individuals, Grants from Foundations, Workplace Giving Campaigns, and Corporate Sponsorship and Cause-Related Marketing are all sources from which we receive generous financial support. These funds are used to carry out our mission of feeding hungry people in our community.
