Mission

Michiana Crime Stoppers, Inc. (fdba. South Bend Area Crime Stoppers, Inc.) began in 1983 to assist police in northern Indiana and southwest Michigan in the identification and apprehension of felony offender. Crime Stoppers realizes that two primary impediments for people with information on felony crimes to contact police is 1) fear of retribution, and 2) apathy. Crime Stoppers offers a means for people to give their information anonymously to overcome the fear, and cash rewards to overcome the apathy.

Notes from the nonprofit

Michiana Crime Stoppers receives anonymous tips on felony crimes by phone, or secure encrypted links through our website and Facebook pages, and also by a smart phone app, TipSubmit Mobile. Once it is determined to which jurisdiction the tip pertains, it is sent to the appropriate police agency for follow up. When we are advised by that agency that the tip led to the arrest or indictment of a felony offender, the board of directors votes on a reward amount for that tipster in a range of up to $1,000. We have a procedure by which that tipster can claim their reward, all the while remaining anonymous. Money to pay the rewards comes from donations and fundraising efforts. Crime Stoppers has no paid employees. The coordinator and staff support are employed by the South Bend Police Department.

Charting impact

Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.

Our goal is to increase the number of the tips received and increase the number of felony case closures and apprehensions.

Our two-pronged approach to do this is by increasing awareness of our program in our region, and raising additional funds to increase the amount of cash rewards as incentive.
