Mission

The ARMA International Educational Foundation is a funding resource for individuals and organizations for the advancement of knowledge in the field of information management through research and education.  The Foundation concentrates its funding and promotional activities in three areas: funds and supports research to address critical issues in information management; provides education development grants and scholarships to enhance knowledge, skills and abilities of practitioners in the field, and fosters educational initiatives that develop information management skills and programs.

What we aim to solve

There is always need in the field of information management for objective research. The Foundation is filling this void. It funds objective research by selecting quality projects and researchers and publishes research reports that will inform legal briefs, academic publications, graduate dissertations, and other publications. There is also always a need to support practitioners who aspire to become recognized career professionals in the field. The Foundation provides awareness for educational opportunities and pursuits through its International Directory of English Language Courses and Programs in Records and Information Management. It provides and administers scholarships at the undergraduate and graduate levels at accredited schools. Information field related Certification reimbursement grants are also awarded and administered through the Foundation.

Research in Records and Information Management

The Foundation has developed a Research Agenda to help focus and provide context, direction and priorities for research and development efforts in records and information management, as well as information governance.
The emphasis of research and development initiatives is in areas where information professionals need new strategies, products, and tools right away to deal with the implications of information technology and other issues. The approach is pragmatic: identify a problem or issue, review best practices, look at actual records and information settings, carry out analysis, develop solutions or recommendations, bring a report or other product to completion in a timely fashion, and widely disseminate the results.
The current Research Agenda is as follows:
Privacy: Research projects that examine various aspects of privacy and/or information security, including, but not limited to:
• Protecting personally identifiable information with the "right to be forgotten,” comparing global views of privacy to the U.S. perspective
• Examining the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) and its requirements as they pertain to metadata
• Regulatory updates – US and non-US (including the European Union’s pending GDPR requirements)
Risk Management and Mitigation: Research projects that examine various information-related risks and ways to manage and mitigate them, including, but not limited to:
• Risk mitigation/business continuity strategies for records
• Risk assessment and tools
• Risk reporting and corrective action tools
• Evaluating the practice of defensible disposition of legacy data
• Managing records in the Business Continuity Plan
Information Governance: Research projects that address different aspects of information governance, including, but not limited to:
• Managing mobile devices and the information they contain
• Managing social media use in different organizations
• Maintaining data maps in different organizations
Information Security: Research projects that address the deficiencies in current means of information security, including, but not limited to:
• Measuring the use of encryption and the extent of its impact on managing information
• Hacking – Implementing a multi-layer security system to prevent intrusion (technology and record creator/holder participation and compliance)
• Losing information through security breaches – how to recover and prevent recurrence
• Cybersecurity best practices – technology updates, how to prepare, etc.
Technology/Emerging Trends: Research projects that examine popular technology uses from the perspective of sharing new insights and pointing out potential risks and benefits and/or what new technology might be on the horizon, including but not limited to:
• Cloud computing and managing records in the "cloud”
• Managing records generated by using mobile devices
• Defining and working with Big Data
• Business intelligence/Artificial intelligence
• Current challenges and implications of managing information created, shared and used via social media
Standards and Best Practices: Research projects that examine the relevant standards and best practices that are developed and used by information governance practitioners, including, but not limited to:
• US and non-US information governance standards: comparison and implications
• Determining information governance best practice
• Productivity and ROI
• Using standards and other measurements as IG program assessment tools
Litigation Readiness and Discovery: Research projects that address various aspects litigation readiness, including, but not limited to:
• Analyzing litigation readiness program elements as practiced by different organizations/industries
• Predictive coding
• Current trends in implementing and managing legal holds
The budget for each research project is $5,000 plus $500 in administrative costs.

The overall Goal is to strengthen records and information management through development of the knowledge, skills, and abilities of selected practitioners in the field.

The Objectives of the program are to:
*Provide Foundation scholarships and grants to qualifying individuals pursuing degrees and certifications in the field of information management,
*Strengthen the capacity of individuals to pursue successful careers in this field through support of their efforts to become credentialed in the field of information management and participation in their professional associations, and
*Enhance the ability of individuals to deal effectively with records and information management issues through funding for educational programs that significantly expand their knowledge and understanding of issues and practices

Scholarships are being offered in 3 areas: Graduate (2, $1K grants and 1, $2K grant), and 2 Undergraduate (1, $6K grant and 1, $2K grant) $500 administrative costs

Population(s) Served

This program provides tuition grants up to $1,000 per semester to individuals who have already completed one year of college work and are studying to earn a degree in an accredited school needed to support a career in records and information management.

Population(s) Served

This project is to help fund the expenses associated with bringing North American instructors to developing countries, particularly in Africa.

Due to budgetary constraints, the program is currently not being funded.

This program offers up to $500 reimbursements to those individuals who have successfully acquired or are in pursuit of a certification in some aspect of information management. Certification brings confidence in their skills and credentials to practitioners which can lead to promotion and higher salaries.

The three strategic goals of the Foundation are to:

1. Support research to address critical issues in information management
2. Provide funding opportunities to enhance knowledge, skills & abilities of practitioners
3. Foster educational initiatives that develop information management skills & programs

*Focusing on research that propels the field forward; it provides grants & scholarships to those who can then give back to the information community as credentialed information professionals. It also supports & promotes educational forums that impact & educate the global information management practitioner.
*It supports the financial capabilities of students who qualify & are pursuing degrees & certification in the information management field to achieve their education goals & professional status.
*It actively pursues reciprocal partnerships through strategic alliances providing cutting edge educational opportunities to develop information management skills & programs.

The Foundation's strategic direction is to implement policies and procedures, and roles and responsibilities for governance, succession planning, and Board of Trustees responsibilities, committees, and administrative functions. We have created and will maintain our Strategic Plan and are in the process of moving forward with a technology plan to facilitate communication and transparency.

To achieve the Foundation's goals for research, scholarship, and educational forums, a strategic direction for fundraising, marketing and outreach have been developed and are in process.
In addition, as a volunteer organization, the Foundation strives to place experienced and talented resources in officer and committee chair positions to provide the leadership required to achieve its mission and goals.
Finally, with improved marketing, outreach and sound investment, the Foundation has broadened its income stream which will reap additional expanded capabilities.

1. In January 2017 a strategic plan was developed & continues.
2. The Foundation has a solid governance structure established, Revision of governance documents is performed in the normal course of business for continued success.
3. A succession plan for the Chairman is in place & has been used. Next: To expand the plan to include additional officers & trustees.
4. Over 25 research projects are published. Next: New research projects are being developed, some contracted and some are ready to publish.
5. Graduate & undergraduate scholarships are awarded & continue to be offered. Next: Increasing amounts & number of scholarships available.
6. Certification grants continue to be offered. Next: Increasing number of grants available.
7. Successful fundraising campaigns have been run. Next: new campaigns are being developed, others revamped and pushed out to achieve $500K in the endowment fund.
8. Partnerships & alliances are in development. Next: To work with a partner on a project.
