Mission

AAUW has been a leader in the effort to interest more young girls in science, technology, engineering and math also known as STEM. The first summer Tech Trek camp was held on the campus of California's Stanford University in 1998. Now there are ten California camps and ten additional camps scattered around the United States. Our mission in Florida is to continue two camps every year thanks to very generous sponsors and supportive donors, families pay only a $50 fee to send a girl to STEM camp so that girls from a wide range of backgrounds are able to attend.

What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

Program 1

In 2023 we had two very successful on site camps with about the same number of girls at each camp. Girls who attended the camps were exposed to diverse career paths in the STEM fields and discovered how STEM impacted their daily lives. They participated in hands-on-activities that increased their learning and met female STEM role models of all ages. They met, became friends with, and worked with girls from other schools with similar interests. On some projects they worked in pairs to solve a problem, create something new or build an item such as a robot or a bridge. There were 4 morning core courses and 4 different workshops at each camp. Prior to camp each girls chose one 12 hour core course and one workshop per afternoon. The girls had a dinner with STEM professional women with moderated panel discussions from four different STEM fields. The girls had opportunities to ask questions of the women panelists. We offered a STEM field trip to further the understanding of how STEM improves our lives.
