Every animal has a story...

Mission

The San Diego Animal Support Foundation assists more than 35 underfunded local shelters and rescue agencies. Unlike any other organization, the foundation promotes the adoption of animals from ALL the rescues and shelters who need us...many of whom cannot afford the luxury of a publicity department or PR person. This is done at NO EXPENSE to the local organizations. We use daily television segments, weekly radio spots, and our relationship with the media to promote adoption, events, proper pet care, and seasonal issues. The SDASF organizes four massive annual adoption events: BIG DOGS ROCK, Cupids & Canines, Santa Paws, & Dog Days of Summer, which bring the local agencies together for adoption events featuring 150-200+ adoptable dogs and dozens of legitimate agencies in one place! Due to the lack of available spay/neuter services, the foundation also has a FREE spay/neuter program for individuals who can't afford to have their pets altered. We also provide a platform for owners to raise money for medical care without having fees taken out of the balance.
In the Wildfires of October 2007, the Foundation brought thousands and thousands of people together from across the nation to help save animals and livestock affected by the fires. For 5 days, a 24-hour line was maintained bringing together fire victims in need, transportation volunteers, & people who were willing to provide boarding.  In 2009, the Foundation answered the cry of deployed San Diego based Marines to bring back multiple dogs from Afghanistan that would have been killed if left behind.  A separate fund for this mission was maintained, and 100% of the donations were spent on bringing the dogs home.
We embrace and support well thought out ideas for programs that ultimately increase adoptions from legitimate organizations, prevent unwanted litters from being born, and bring the Southern California community one step closer to zero euthanasia.

What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

Pet Adoption Program

1) Pet Adoption Program: Promotes the adoption of animals from more than 30 legitimate local shelters and rescue organizations. At zero cost to the local shelters and rescues, we take adoptable pets on television. During these segments, we are able to promote adoption, and educate the public about general animal welfare while promoting the non-profits and adoption events.

Population(s) Served

2) Spay/Neuter Program: We fund a free spay/neuter program with the partnership of local vets who provide these services to us at an extremely low cost. Our target audience is otherwise responsible pet owners who have put off spaying or neutering their pets due to cost, or people who simply will not spay/neuter unless they get it for free.
We have recently acquired the help of an experienced volunteer to expand the numbers of vets with whom we work, and expand this resource to more locations within the County.

Population(s) Served

The SDASF organizes four one-day mega adoption events featuring between 250 - 300 adoptable dogs & cats from approximately 25-30 legitimate local rescues and shelters. This involves negotiating location, bringing together all the organizations, mapping, gathering 50+ extra volunteers, and massive publicity! The very successful events bring adoptable pets to adopters in one convenient place, but also brings out new volunteers and foster homes to benefit the participating non-profits. It is a completely altruistic endeavor, and therefore we do not accept fees from participating rescues/shelters, nor do we charge admission from the public. To date, these events have been put together on a zero budget, but future success will depend on funds for promotion and advertising reaching out to the community. A budget of $5,000 would allow us to take out one giant, highly visible ad in the newspaper for each event and help to cover the cost of required permits and liability insurance.

Population(s) Served

3) Emergency Medical Fund: We work with owners to help raise donations to pay for necessary medical care. The families who ask for our services are required to help us raise donations to specifically cover these expenses, as well as pick up a portion of the initial fees, as a show of good faith. Any unspecified money donated to the medical fund is used to contribute toward medical care for those who may not have the time to raise money for their pet.
