What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

Kayak for Conservation

One of our signature programs is Kayak for Conservation. We kicked off the program’s 2020 season on June 17, and in 121 outings, we had 1,077 participants experience and steward the Wild Mile of the Chicago River. These participants helped remove 282 pounds of trash from the river and documented 3,410 wildlife observations for Shedd’s ongoing research. We also had a few community organizations join us for free kayak sessions, namely Student Conservation Association, Imagine Englewood If, and LGBTQ+ Out in Nature. And by implementing a pay-what you can model, we reduced access barriers so that more people could participate in this special program – giving participants the chance to learn about and support the creation of new, high-quality aquatic habitat, study biodiversity, and contribute to scientific studies of the Chicago River led by Shedd researchers.
