What we aim to solve

While many functions of a mission agency have changed over the decades, TEAM has a crucial role in extending God's Kingdom to redeem and restore his creation. God still calls workers within the Church to go and live cross-culturally, and TEAM has a trusted and seasoned role in partnering with the Church to prepare, send, and support them. But we do so today in a dramatically changed environment, as the following illustrates: * Real-time communication and available air travel * Cyber and physical security threats * The West's hyper-secularization, eroding commitment to missions * State and non-state oppression * Restricted government access for "traditional" ministry * Regional conflicts, displacing millions, destabilize nations, and cultural identity

Church Ministries

The global church is at the center of everything TEAM missionaries do.

Whether evangelizing to college students in Portugal, discipling new believers in Guatemala or planting churches in the Philippines, all of TEAM’s work points to the church. We believe rooting our activities in the local church makes ministry more effective and churches more viable. Rather than starting independent churches or projects that compete with the existing church, TEAM missionaries partner with local congregations, Christian groups and national leaders whenever possible.

Change is only lasting if it outlives us. TEAM believes in the biblical mandate to make disciples and equip them to serve through developing leaders in the church. In many areas of the developing world, the formation of skilled church leaders has not kept pace with rapid church growth. Maturing national churches, particularly in Latin America, are sending out missionaries like never before, increasing the demand for effective missionary training. And in the Muslim world, demand has never been greater for highly-trained, national church planters. TEAM missionaries work through seminaries, colleges and Bible institutes around the world to train the next generation of church leaders, from Central America to Southern Africa to Southeast Asia.

Education is one of the most powerful tools for empowering people to live more fulfilled lives and, ultimately, to live up to their potential as followers of Christ. A child — or an adult — with an education is far more likely to escape poverty, avoid exploitation, and improve her health. For more than a century, TEAM has served around the world in teaching and education ministries that today include international and “missionary-kid” (MK) schools, seminaries, colleges, and government schools. We provide opportunities to serve in educational settings where a biblical worldview can be expressed and Christ’s love can be demonstrated.

Business as mission often opens doors to the gospel in countries that are not open to traditional church ministries. In contexts where government or cultural perception prohibits missionaries from living and working openly, the best way to make disciples is often by seeking employment in the local marketplace or launching a new business. TEAM’s business-as-mission (BAM) initiatives strive to be profitable, spiritually transformative and environmentally sustainable. From managing a hotel in Southeast Asia to performing science demonstrations at birthday parties in Europe, missionary entrepreneurs at TEAM work in partnership with nationals on the field.

Words only have meaning if they’re understandable. When a man in an African village opens a Bible to read it for the first time, he stands on decades of work done by dedicated translators. Unfortunately, roughly 200 million people still do not have any Scripture in their own language. Of more than 6,800 languages spoken today, less than 2,000 have a Bible available in that language. We desire that all people have the opportunity to read God’s word in their heart language. We work closely with national believers and language experts to produce accurate translations.

In the West and beyond, today’s world is captivated by entertainment. It has become an almost singular pursuit for many and is increasingly the key way that messages are disseminated into culture. As the number of voices grows, never has there been a greater need for creative arts that point to Christ. TEAM’s arts and media initiatives serve churches and communities, from puppet ministry in Central America, to an arts and music center in Southeast Asia, to website, video, and print production around the world. We focus on projects and expressions that are locally appropriate and will connect effectively with those who do not know Christ. TEAM seeks visual, performing and technical artists who desire to invest their gifts in service of the church to the glory of God, as an integral part of discipleship and worship. We believe in seeking the welfare of the cities or villages where we’ve been sent. When a woman earns extra income for her family by sewing bags in a microenterprise, or when children play on a soccer field built on an abandoned lot, the entire community benefits. When we seek the welfare of our cities, we are tangibly loving our neighbors and proclaiming the importance of community in discipleship. TEAM community development initiatives range from helping Japanese communities rebuild from multiple disasters, to training community workers in the Philippines, to managing community centers in Latin America and Asia. We focus on projects that are sustainable and locally appropriate.

Jesus often met people’s physical needs before he met their spiritual needs. TEAM places doctors, nurses, dentists and other healthcare workers around the world. But more than simply meeting physical needs, our medical missionaries support discipleship and church planting efforts wherever they serve. Our healthcare initiatives go beyond treatment. TEAM’s work aids under-served populations through community health outreach, counseling, training national workers in preventive care, and HIV/AIDS education. We serve in partnership with local hospitals and medical facilities, focusing on providing medical services that are not readily available within existing structures. TEAM’s medical missionaries and partners serve in diverse regions that include South Asia, the Middle East, Central America and Southern Africa. We want the message of Jesus Christ to go forth in new ways and would love to help you start your missionary journey.

A woman in a slum community has seen Western missionaries come and go. But when one of those missionaries sits across the table to share a meal with her, everything changes — for both of them. Few acts bring strangers together like breaking bread. TEAM’s hospitality initiatives create opportunities to build community around the world. Such acts open doors for the gospel and discipleship. Whether organizing neighborhood dinners in Europe or coordinating mobile cafés for disaster victims in Japan. Such acts open doors forthe gospel and discipleship. TEAM also places missionaries in the professional hospitality industry, serving in TEAM-led businesses that require hotel managers, housekeepers, and baristas.

Much of the suffering and injustice around the world is the direct result of environmental destruction – God created our environment to provide for His people and, at TEAM, we care about it because we care about people. One of God’s first instructions to man in the Bible was to care for the earth. The environment is the tool God most often uses to provide for his people and, at TEAM, we care about it because we care about people. Whether engineering a hydroelectric project or assisting local farmers with crops, TEAM’s environmental projects solve practical problems and support discipleship efforts. We pursue initiatives that are embraced by local community members and require minimal sustained outside funding.

Charting impact

Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.

To continue global ministry, TEAM must train, equip and counsel prospective and current missionaries to navigate these challenges with courage and hope. We play a crucial role in assisting national churches in training, resourcing, and sending workers to unreached people and beyond. With over 40 ministry areas and access to many more through partnerships, TEAM receives cross-cultural workers and facilitates their effective deployment. For example, we are partnering with the Southeast Asian Church in sending their members to reach other Southeast Asian countries not open to North Americans.

While methods have changed over the decades, our mission and work still emanates from Christ’s mandate to his disciples to take the Gospel to the nations. Our work is an extension of God’s redemptive design for human history, and our vision is to see the people of God from every tribe, tongue, people, and nation gathered around the throne of Heaven worshiping our Lord Jesus Christ.

TEAM works holistically so churches can have global impact through a diverse program of Ministry Initiatives (ministries) including evangelism, education, leadership development, medicine and health, anti-trafficking, community development, agriculture, disaster relief, refugee work, and creation care. TEAM works strategically and collaboratively to make disciples and plant churches, through our Ministry Initiatives, in places of greatest need.

TEAM brings nearly 130 years of diverse ministry experience on 6 continents and in nearly 50 countries, with 550+ mid and long-term missionary workers and scores of short-term workers.

We believe that the Gospel is spread most effectively and in God-honoring ways when His people collaborate, both on individual and corporate levels. Since the Body of Christ is composed of many parts with varying gifts (Romans 12; 1 Corinthians 12; Ephesians 4), no one person or organization can fulfill God’s missional intent to redeem all the peoples of the world. This is true in local, regional, and global contexts.

We believe that God is most honored and we find great joy as we journey together with other streams of the global church, sharing vision, control, and resources within relationships characterized by grace, trust, and fellowship in the Gospel.

TEAM has a core of over 2,000 churches and other mission agencies in North America with whom to engage and collaborate to mobilize the next generation of missionaries.

In order to enhance the Kingdom impact of our existing ministries, better steward our God-given resources, and expand our impact, TEAM partners with South American Mission, Crossworld, and SEND International. It is through this generous collaboration called the Therefore Alliance, that we are able to utilize each organization’s strengths to mobilize virtually anyone, to anywhere, from anywhere to fulfill the Great Commission.

Since our founding in 1890, there has been a dramatic growth of the church, especially in Central and South America, Africa, and Asia. TEAM is increasingly seeking ways to serve and assist the global church as it fulfills God’s call to make disciples among the nations. While we will not abandon our commitment to serving the church in North America, the future of missions will be increasingly shaped by our global brothers and sisters outside North America. This is something God is doing. Much of TEAM’s future fruitfulness will be discovered in serving and following global leaders with whom we can link arms as we serve Christ together. Such endeavors hold the promise of significant Kingdom advances in some of the neediest regions of the world.

October 2020, marks TEAM's 130th year of extending God's Kingdom globally. Over the decades, TEAM has had to adapt and flex to keep pace with God's sovereign plan and the changing global backdrop. At the time of TEAM's birth, powerful European nations colonized a majority of countries in the developing world. Along with political rule, they brought education systems and state religion. Today, the political landscape has drastically changed.

The early missionary sending movements bore fruit, and Christ's Church is flourishing in the majority world, evidenced by its willingness to be sent to "the uttermost parts of the earth." Now, as TEAMs mission states, our 2020 focus is to partner with the Global Church (including North America), to equip, send, and receive a multi-directional workforce to live out the Gospel in word and deed. To maintain fruitfulness, TEAM must adapt and flex, so communities of faith multiply through a diverse portfolio of disciple-making strategies.

Evangelism, discipleship, and church planting remain at the core of our mission. By a variety of methods and ministries, TEAM workers engage in redemptive relationships, address needs, and share the Gospel to those who live without hope and meaning in their lives.
