JASC Legacy Center Archives and Library
The Legacy Center Archives, formally established in 1999, is part of the cultural arm of JASC. It houses over 300 unique collections.
The archives documents all facets of Japanese American life from 1890, through the period of World War II internment, and on to the present day. Materials include correspondence and photographs about business life in the 1940s and ’50s; diaries and journals; sketch books and drawings of life in the internment camps; artifacts made in the camps; rare published materials such as camp newspapers and high school yearbooks; information pamphlets targeting Japanese Americans; and vital records such as alien registration cards and U.S. Army service records.
The JASC Archives is arguably the most significant collection of Japanese American history, arts and cultural materials in the Midwest, and the only significant collection documenting life outside the West Coast population centers.
The Legacy Center Archives project is supported in part by a Japanese American Confinement Sites Grant administered by the National Park Service, Department of the Interior, with additional support from the Gaylord and Dorothy Donnelley Foundation and The Richard H. Driehaus Foundation and the MacArthur Fund for Arts and Culture at The Richard H. Driehaus Foundation.
Adult Day Services
Adult Day Services is a program that offers supportive services to older adults and their families, enabling the elderly to maintain their independence and hold on to the quality of life and dignity they deserve. The program provides different activities to help maintain and develop physical and mental capacities to the fullest. As a service program, we are committed to:
• Assisting clients with their physical, mental and emotional needs
• Providing clients with a stimulating environment, enabling them to enjoy their senior years and to share their vast experience with others
• Providing family caregivers with needed respite
Home Support Services
JASC offers assistance to individuals who need in-home care in a compassionate and culturally competent manner through two homemaker programs, the Illinois Department on Aging’s Community Care Program and JASC’s Private Client Program.
JASC’s Private Client Program
In this program, JASC staff provide helpful homemaking services for people of all ages who need extra help at home. Examples of people who would use these services include pregnant women and new mothers, those too busy with life and career to keep up with household chores, those recovering from surgery or anyone else who needs help in their home.
Illinois Department on Aging’s Community Care Program
This program focuses on enabling older adults (age 60+) to remain independent and safe in their own homes, and delay or prevent nursing home or other residential placement. In this program, the State of Illinois pays full or partial costs for eligible seniors. A case manager visits your home to determine eligibility and an appropriate care plan.
Services
Examples of our services in both programs include:
• Basic housekeeping
• Laundry
• Meal preparation and light cooking
• Errand services, including food and related shopping and prescription pick-up
• Medication reminders
• Assistance telephoning physicians, pharmacies, or the Social Security Administration
• Personal care
• Advocacy
• Companionship after a loss or emotional hardship
Tampopo-kai
This unique program has the goal of exposing children to the richness and wonder of the Japanese language and culture through songs, stories, games, arts and crafts, and other activities. The program is geared towards toddlers and preschoolers with three sessions that last approximately 12 weeks each, and a summer session of approximately four weeks.
