What we aim to solve

SOURCE: Self-reported by organization

Family Services in our state are overwhelmed. They face the difficult task of finding solutions when abuse and neglect has occurred. There are approximately 440,000 children in US Foster Care - approx 16,000 in Illinois Foster Care. The average length of time a child spends in IL Foster Care - 32.8 months* Adoption services are incredibly expensive and so heavily regulated that it discourages many people from pursuing adoption. The total costs of an independent or agency assisted adoption in the US can cost $30,000-$40,000 or more. A typical home study can take 6 moths to 2 years to complete. Mental Health symptoms often go untreated for years before treatment is received. The average cost of a counseling session in the US is $90, putting counseling services out of reach for many with limited resources.** *source: childtrends.org/publications/state-level-data-for-understanding-child-welfare-in-the-united-states **source: nami.org/mhstats

Safe Families For Children - Implementor

ICM is an implementor of a nation wide movement of radical hospitality called Safe Families for Children. ICM implements the Safe Families model by recruiting, training and supporting a network of host families and support volunteers.

This program provides free & voluntary support to families in crisis by facilitating short term guardianship arrangements for families in crisis.

Charting impact

Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.

Our mission is to glorify God by restoring and empowering families. We aim to educate and mobilize volunteers to join us in this work.

Through Family Care we:

-Keep children safe during a family crisis such as homelessness, hospitalization or domestic violence in an effort to prevent child abuse and/or neglect.

-Support and stabilize families in crisis by surrounding them with caring, compassionate community.

-Reunite families and reduce the number of children entering the child welfare system. We seek to be an alternative to foster care, where appropriate.

Through our adoption department we help families overcome the rising costs and complex regulations of adoption by providing excellent adoption services below their true cost.

Finally, our counseling department ensures that clients have access to mental health services regardless of their ability to pay.

The key to our success is in the strength of our volunteer network. We recruit and train small groups of compassionate volunteers for a variety of support roles that extend beyond host families. We know host families and placing parents need support to emerge stronger from a time of crisis.

We continue to build relationships with incredible churches and individuals who are already living out the values of hospitality & generosity. ICM offers a locally rooted mechanism to turn those values into meaningful action.

We believe in retaining experienced and excellent adoption staff to help families navigate the complexities of domestic and international adoption.

We keep our counseling services as flexible and accessible as possible. By partnering with donors who subsidize the cost of counseling, clients only pay what they can afford for this crucial service.

We are a small non profit with an incredible history of family services.

We have approximately 100 volunteers in our central, IL Safe Families network. We are constantly recruiting and training to strengthen this network of host families, family coaches, family friends and resource partners.

We have two excellent adoption specialists with over 16 years combined experience in adoption. We provide full home study and post placement services for domestic and international adoptions; however, we only provide placement services for domestic adoptions.

We provide quality mental health care that is grounded in psychologically-informed principles and research. Our goal is to foster safe therapeutic relationships that encourage individuals to respond in new ways to life's many challenges.

ICM's approach to family ministry has adapted over the decades since it's founding in 1967. We moved from a group home model, to a Christian Foster care network. Then in 2012 we pivoted away from licensing foster homes and focused on building a network of Safe Families rooted in central, IL. Last year we added 11 new families who trained to become Safe Families hosts, and we continue to grow this committed network of over 100 volunteers.

Last year (2019) we served 24 children from 14 different families through Safe Families hosting.
An additional 13 were served through creative wrap around support from our volunteers that made hosting unnecessary.

Last year 48 families were served with home study services for domestic and international adoption. This includes 10 families who finalized adoptions last year.

We celebrate that over 32 clients were served through free and sliding scale counseling.
