What we aim to solve

SOURCE: Self-reported by organization

THE CITY was launched in 2019 to address the expanding local news desert in New York City. Today, THE CITY brings readers across the five boroughs reporting on the issues that matter most to them. The New York City media landscape is a study in contradictions. As the media capital of the world, it is home to both legacy national and international brands and innovative digital models. Yet over the past decade, the growing local journalism gap has led to a sharp decline in reporting on the city’s powerful institutions, neighborhoods and complex social worlds. Many news outlets that make their home in New York have their vision fixed on national and international horizons, far beyond the neighborhoods that most New Yorkers call home. THE CITY fills this critical local reporting gap with a focus on accountability and service journalism, a free to access model and a commitment to ground-up coverage of neighborhoods and communities.

What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

The Open Newsroom

From THE CITY’s inception, engagement has been a core pillar of our mission and work. In 2019 we launched The Open Newsroom, a series of neighborhood convenings that helps us explore ways to make local news more collaborative. We worked with the Brooklyn Public Library to bring New Yorkers together to discuss the issues that were the most relevant to them. Since then, The Open Newsroom has evolved to a source of vital information for New Yorkers looking for regular rent and employment updates.

Charting impact

Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.

THE CITY covers New York’s uncovered neighborhoods, holds the powerful to account and helps make sense of the greatest city in the world. Launched in 2019 as a response to the accelerating erosion of New York City’s local news capacity, THE CITY is the only outlet consistently producing free to read, robust accountability journalism for a wide audience.

THE CITY is New York City’s leading accountability and service news organization, providing hard-hitting and impactful coverage of the city’s sprawling network of government agencies, courts and neighborhoods. It aims to reach and respond to New York City’s diverse communities, addressing their information needs, making sense of complex issues, highlighting solutions and empowering its audiences with knowledge.

In a city of 8.5 million people, every New Yorker deserves access to in-depth, trustworthy reporting about the issues that affect them. Through strong beat, investigative and explanatory journalism along with inclusive and equitable community news and information, THE CITY is dedicated to serving the people of New York and ensuring a thriving city for all.

THE CITY’s reporting drives impact and informs the public across the five boroughs and beyond. A foundation of a steady publishing cadence and consistent follow up on stories and issues of importance to New Yorkers ensures that people across the city are informed about the topics that impact their lives.

The organization’s newsroom publishes both accountability reporting and explanatory, or service, journalism that fosters civic engagement with New York’s communities. THE CITY makes complex issues easily accessible and relevant to New Yorkers through interactive tools, partnerships and local neighborhood engagement.

Since its launch, THE CITY has produced important information resources including a series of guides to help New Yorkers navigate the primary elections and explanatory reporting on a broad range of civic issues from the complexities of electric bills to the mechanics of community boards. Its expertise in community engagement and strong commitment to partnerships has helped bring wide audiences the essential independent local news they deserve.

THE CITY’s primary editorial product is its in-depth reporting, which it publishes weekdays on its digital platform, www.thecity.nyc. Its newsletter, THE CITY Scoop, is delivered weekdays and Sunday, while additional newsletters serve New Yorkers with news they can use on housing, jobs and civic engagement.

Key beats include housing, criminal justice, transportation, City Hall and labor. They are covered by deeply experienced journalists working closely with veteran editors. Reporters and editors work in tandem with THE CITY’s data and news application team who spot patterns in the numbers, identify possible stories and build the tools that bring often confusing or difficult to access information to New Yorkers in digestible, easy to navigate formats.

THE CITY covers the issues that are important to everyday New Yorkers; its stories get action, drive change and reach growing audiences.

From THE CITY’s inception, engagement has been a core pillar of its mission and work. Connecting and engaging with readers has enabled the organization to address their information needs by providing relevant and accessible resources including explainers, a series of election guides and powerful live dashboards that track New York’s coronavirus data and economic recovery.

THE CITY’s reporting has also led to a slew of direct impacts, such as a federal indictment for fundraising violations during the election campaign of state senator Brian Benjamin that led to his resignation as lieutenant governor, more equitable access to the COVID-19 vaccine in low income neighborhoods and improved access to teachers for incarcerated high school students.

Building on its existing strengths and continuing to diversify its product offerings, THE CITY is dedicated to fulfilling local reporting’s most vital functions for all New Yorkers.
