WELLSPRING-CORI TERRY AND DANCERS
Programs and results
What we aim to solve
The national trend of reducing support for the arts, education, and health is a threat to Southwest Michigan’s quality of life and economic vitality. Despite the current economic challenges, Wellspring maintains its commitment to furthering its vision as a regional hub for modern dance through the presentation of innovative performances and engagement of diverse audiences.

Ready Movers
Ready Movers is an innovative program which uses movement to teach and deepen the learning of literacy and mindfulness. This program is being developed by Wellspring/Cori Terry & Dancers’ company members in coordination with KC Ready4s. We will be presenting the pilot in April/May, 2018, to preschool classrooms in Kalamazoo. The pilot will include classroom visits twice a week for two weeks; the full launch will be a four-week program in September. Wellspring Company members, who are also experienced dance educators, will present and instruct the program.
Targeted to 4-year olds enrolled in KC Ready4s locations across the community, Ready Movers aims to reduce the learning gap perpetuated by economic and social inequalities and accelerate the growth of social/emotional developmental skills in early childhood learners in Kalamazoo, including children whose families live below the poverty line. The program will utilize fun, engaging, research-based movement, and literacy-integrated, problem-solving activities in pursuit of pre-literacy skills as well as techniques grounded in the latest research in the field of mindfulness, meditation, and stress management in young children. These developmental skills are designed to prepare young learners to achieve future success in their academic subjects.
Community Engagement Through Dance
CETD offers the only dance program of its kind to Kalamazoo area youth, reaching children early in their dance experience and body awareness, providing professional teaching artists to work directly with students, offering programming throughout the community (in schools, youth agencies, and the downtown Wellspring Theater), and is affordable or free of charge.

What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
Wellspring places a strong emphasis on working with new and underserved populations that may not feel a connection to the arts community, especially minority, low-income and at-risk youth. What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
-Restage a minimum of 10 pieces and premiere a minimum of 3 new works\n-Perform a minimum of 9 performances in its Kalamazoo-based season\n-Collaborate artistically with other arts organizations/artists\n-Present a minimum of 150 guest choreographers/dancers in the RAD Fest\n-Offer 34 weeks of classes for adults and youth three years of age and older\n-Pilot the Ready Movers program reaching 6 classes of high-needs students per school year\n-Award at least 20 scholarships for contemporary dance classes to low-income and at-risk children\n-Partner with other arts organizations on existing free programming for the community\n-Engage corporate relationships to increase revenue and in-kind support through sponsorship, donation and advertising programs\n-Operational staff and Board of Directors will engage in quarterly capacity-building activities including its annual Board Retreat.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
Wellspring/Cori Terry & Dancers operates and performs in the custom-designed 109-seat Wellspring Theater within the Epic Center, a hub of the arts community centrally located in downtown Kalamazoo. Wellspring employs a solid company of talented and accomplished performers who have been working together for years - some for more than twenty. They bring with them a wealth of experience that compliments and deepens the company. The Board of Directors is committed to providing appropriate and equitable compensation for the dancers and staff, professionals who are devoted to expressing and furthering the company's goals. To further encourage long-term commitment to the organization and develop its human capacity,
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
Wellspring is proud of its incredible history. Very few professional modern dance companies have this degree of longevity. More impressively, at 37 years this organization is in a renewed and innovative state. The board, staff and dancers realize that Wellspring’s artistic accomplishments and organizational strengths are the result of a strong founding vision, key funding partnerships, board leadership, staff and volunteer dedication, and a community that loves quality art in the form of choreography and dance.

- We analyze disaggregated data and root causes of race disparities that impact the organization's programs, portfolios, and the populations served.
- We have community representation at the board level, either on the board itself or through a community advisory board.
- We help senior leadership understand how to be inclusive leaders with learning approaches that emphasize reflection, iteration, and adaptability.
- We engage everyone, from the board to staff levels of the organization, in race equity work and ensure that individuals understand their roles in creating culture such that one’s race identity has no influence on how they fare within the organization.
