Mission

The Dallas Urban Debate Alliance is committed to providing Dallas ISD students with the transformational skills found in academic debate. From critical thinking, advanced research techniques, argument formulation, refutation, questioning strategies, to finely honed listening and oral presentation skills, we believe that debate provides students the opportunity to become informed leaders in their schools and communities and to make a difference in their ability to advocate for themselves and others.

What we aim to solve

SOURCE: Self-reported by organization

We endeavor to provide the under-resourced students of Dallas ISD with the transformative life skills found through debate education; the skills taught equip students to advocate for themselves and others, develop better study habits and achieve higher grades, assist them in graduating from high school at higher rates and attend college, and prepare them for leadership roles in their communities.

Charting impact

Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.

Our aim is to reach as many middle school and high school students as possible to help them develop their voices and gain confidence in expressing themselves through well-researched and well-organized oral and written communication.

We provide professional develop training for our teacher/coaches; Fall, Spring, and Summer workshops; scrimmages and regular season tournaments; Winter and Spring City Championships; multiple public debates; new debate formats that are accessible to all of our students; access to state and national competitive opportunities; and internships and mentor programs. We are looking to begin a Spanish-debate program in the future.

We have experienced and talented full-time staff; access to a strong and dedicated alumni network; a strong partnership with the school district; commitments from partners in the local, regional, and national debate network; and a committed and visionary Board of Directors.

In the three years following the Covid-outbreak and move to online education, we have become the second-largest urban debate league in the country and have expanded our offerings to include two new debate formats. Our rate of growth post-pandemic is the fastest among UDLs and our numbers are almost double what they were in 2019.
