BISSELL PET FOUNDATION
Until every pet has a home.
Programs and results
What we aim to solve
Each year in North America, more than six million pets enter shelters, and nearly one million of them are euthanized. Shelters and rescues work tirelessly every day to address the pet overpopulation problem and they need help. BISSELL Pet Foundation creates programs and initiatives to address our nation’s pet overpopulation crisis to change the outlook for thousands of dogs and cats, until every pet has a home.
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
BISSELL Pet Foundation
Unlike other national animal welfare organizations, 100% of every gift made to BISSELL Pet Foundation saves pets through:
- "Fix the Future," the nation’s largest nonprofit high-volume spay/neuter contract veterinarian program. Through the deployment of our network of relief veterinarians, BPF breaks the barriers to affordable and accessible spay/neuter. Each pet impacted also receives preventative vaccines and microchips. This program not only prepares shelter pets for adoption, but also provides crucial services to community-owned pets through clinics for $25 or less.
- "Empty the Shelters," the largest funded adoption event in the country. ETS helps homeless pets find families by making adoption affordable for prospective pet owners by reimbursing participating organizations for each pet adopted.
- BPF’s Animal Incident Management (AIM) team responds to crises ranging from natural disasters to disease outbreaks and puppy mill cases, even in the most difficult situations.

Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
BISSELL Pet Foundation is a national animal welfare organization dedicated to ending pet homelessness.
In partnership with shelters across the country and by providing much-needed resources to underserved communities, BISSELL Pet Foundation is reducing the number of animals in shelters and rescues through our pet adoption, transport, spay/neuter, vaccination, microchipping, and crisis and disaster response programs. As a hands-on foundation, we are committed to understanding the needs of different geographic areas, knowing our partners, and working together to create the best possible outcomes through grant funding for programs and initiatives that directly impact homeless pets.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
Fix the Future Spay/Neuter Program
Fix the Future was launched to address the lack of access to veterinary care for both shelters and pet owners. Through the deployment of our network of relief veterinarians, BPF is breaking the barriers to affordable and accessible spay/neuter. Each pet impacted also receives preventative vaccines and microchips. This program not only prepares shelter pets for adoption, but also provides crucial services to community-owned pets through clinics for $25 or less.
Fix the Future also includes a voucher program to offset the cost of spay/neuter in communities where BPF has partnerships with local veterinarians. BPF-funded vouchers help remove the financial burden for pet owners, allowing pets to stay in homes without unplanned litters.

Empty the Shelters
Empty the Shelters is the largest funded national adoption event. This program offers four national quarterly events that make adoption affordable for prospective pet owners by enabling hundreds of participating shelters across the country to offer fee-waived or reduced-fee adoption. BISSELL Pet Foundation provides reimbursement for each pet adopted so participating shelters can charge $50 or less per cat or dog.
As animal shelters nationwide remain at critical capacity and face the heartbreaking decision to euthanize healthy, adoptable pets due to lack of space, Empty the Shelters has become a lifesaving tool for our partners.
Additional emergency events are scheduled as needed.

Crisis & Disaster Response
BISSELL Pet Foundation’s Animal Incident Management (AIM) team responds even in the most difficult situations. rom pre-event planning to post-event recovery, animal search and rescue, shelter support, transport and mass care/humanitarian efforts, AIM assists pets in harm’s way. we assist with large-scale incidents where pets desperately need lifesaving care; secure resources such as temporary housing and treatment in cases of disease outbreak; and provide transport for pets to safety before and after natural disasters strike.
AIM has secured partnerships with Florida, Georgia, Kansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, New Mexico, North Carolina, South Carolina and Texas, as well as more than 40 counties and agencies throughout the country. These partnerships establish collaboration, communication and resource allocation guidelines with key stakeholders before crises and disasters occur to enhance overall response and recovery. AIM’s proactive approach ensures that all parties are prepared to act swiftly and effectively, ultimately resulting in better outcomes for people and pets.

What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
As of September, 2024, more than 850,856 pets have been impacted by BISSELL Pet Foundation since 2011. From spay/neuter to prevent pet overpopulation to funding to help offset the cost of adoption to boots on the ground during crises and disasters and more, every one of BPF's programs is a lifeline for animal welfare teams and the pets they care for. BPF is dedicated to creating the best possible outcomes for homeless pets, until every pet has a home.
