WI Equal Justice Fund (WEJF) was founded in 1996 in response to the critical drop in federal funding for civil legal services for low-income individuals and families. What we aim to solve

SOURCE: Self-reported by organization

WEJF seeks to provide private funding for civil legal aid services in Wisconsin to help ensure everyone has access to attorney assistance, regardless of their finances. Current funding does not allow for everyone in need to get that help.

Charting impact

Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.

We envision a world where everyone has access to attorney assistance when they need it, regardless of their financial situation.

WEJF works to close the justice gap for low-income Wisconsinites by providing private funding to offset some of the lags in government funding for civil legal aid services.

WEJF has worked hard to achieve annual fundraising totals in recent years that are higher than we were able to achieve in the first 20 years of the organization's existence. We continue to seek new avenues for sponsorships.

Since its inception in 1997, Wisconsin Equal Justice Fund, Inc. has raised over $7.6 million for pro bono civil legal aid in Wisconsin.

Data
  • We disaggregate data by demographics, including race, in every policy and program measured.
Policies and processes
  • We use a vetting process to identify vendors and partners that share our commitment to race equity.
  • We seek individuals from various race backgrounds for board and executive director/CEO positions within our organization.
  • We help senior leadership understand how to be inclusive leaders with learning approaches that emphasize reflection, iteration, and adaptability.
  • We engage everyone, from the board to staff levels of the organization, in race equity work and ensure that individuals understand their roles in creating culture such that one’s race identity has no influence on how they fare within the organization.
