Mission

As one of Milwaukee's oldest arts organizations, the Civic Music Association of Milwaukee, dba CIVIC MUSIC MKE, has been active in developing the musical life of our community since 1918. Our mission is to support music education and provide performance opportunities to young musicians in the Greater Milwaukee area. We directly serve over 300 young musicians and music educators through performance opportunities, education and scholarship programs. We also celebrate community members who keep music and music education vibrant by fielding and presenting the EDUCATOR AWARDS and the CITIZEN AWARDS.

The Private Lesson Program - Life Lessons Through Music

Reaching an advanced level of musicianship offers opportunities to develop leadership skills that will carry over to all aspects of their lives. In addition, scholarships and awards can be helpful to students and their families. Equally important, music is a lifelong activity that brings joy and connectedness. All children who know the joy of music no matter the income level of their family. Young musicians who demonstrate financial need and new to private instruction can earn a scholarship for private lessons with a vetted professional musician. Students receive 25 half-hour lessons during the school year, can attend 2 Musician Meet-Ups and perform in a final recital open to the public. Advancement to Year 2 and Year 3 lessons must be initiated by their private teacher. In the current season, 30 teachers are providing lessons to 57 students. With fees purposely kept affordable, 84% of this program is supported by foundation and directed individual support.

Serious music students need opportunities to develop their performance skills. School programs rarely offer opportunities for dedicated students to perform as soloists, or for coaching in the techniques and etiquette necessary for a polished performance. The HSC is open to advanced high school musicians performing at or above the Wisconsin School Musicians Association’s Class A level. Students achieving an advanced level of musical study not only receive a double dose of history and math, but also develop transferable life skills they will build on through their adult life. Vocal and instrumental musicians perform for separate panels of judges and attend various workshops and masterclasses. A prestigious recital opportunity is given to up to the top 10 musicians of the day. Each performer receives an honorarium of $250 to perform in the beautiful Milwaukee Youth Arts Center and four musicians are given scholarships totaling $1,500. This event is free and open to the public.
