Sudden Cardiac Arrest Foundation
Raising awareness, saving lives
Programs and results
What we aim to solve
Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) is the third leading cause of death in the United States. We aim to raise awareness about this public health crisis and educate the public about the importance of recognizing SCA, calling 911, starting CPR, and using the nearest automated external defibrillator (AED). We also aim to help survivors and their loved ones in the journey forward.
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Comprehensive Information Clearinghouse
The cornerstone of the SCA Foundation's programming is our website, https://www.sca-aware.org, which is dedicated exclusively to sudden cardiac arrest and its prevention and treatment. It features news, information, resources. The website section on survivor stories is one of the most popular areas of the website and has become required reading for some EMS agencies.
Cardiac Arrest Survivorship Alliance
The Cardiac Arrest Survivor Alliance™ (CASA), brings together people affected by cardiac arrest—including survivors, loved ones (co-survivors), lay rescuers, and advocates. CASA fosters an online community and provides evidence-based information, peer support, and access to experts to help members recover, re-engage, and thrive. It is an outgrowth of SCAF’s longstanding Survivor Network.
Cardiac arrest survivors often have physical, cognitive, emotional, psychological, and social challenges that can linger for years. Co-survivors and lay rescuers also experience emotional and psychological challenges. CASA’s mission is to address these unmet needs by providing support, information resources, and access to experts. CASA’s vision is to become an indispensable destination for anyone affected by cardiac arrest.
Research
Sudden Cardiac Arrest Foundation is a leader in SCA consumer research with the goal of understanding public awareness of SCA and key messaging that resonates with laypersons and inspires action.
We are also aligned with and support some of the best and brightest in SCA medical research at institutions such as Columbia University, NYU Langone Health, National Institutes of Health, Harvard University, University of Michigan, University of Colorado, Beaumont Hospital, Boston University. Much of this research has been published in peer-reviewed journals.
Call-Push-Shock
Sudden Cardiac Arrest Foundation co-sponsors Call-Push-Shock (CPS), a national collaborative movement. It is designed to drive public awareness, understanding, and action in cases of out-of-hospital cardiac arrest and increase survival rates by speaking in one voice across multiple organizations. CPS urges the public, when it witnesses sudden cardiac arrest, to call 911, provide CPR, and use an automated external defibrillator (AED), if available. CPS messaging is based on our consumer research. Since its inception, we have attracted 50+ co-partners.
