Our programs

What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

The Students' Theatre

Our Students’ Theatre involves students (grades K-12, in school or home schooled) in all aspects of theatrical productions – on stage or behind the scenes – as members of the cast, technical crew, design teams and even directors. Everyone can participate; there are no auditions. Guided by professional artists, students provide the creative vision and produce their own high quality productions, performed in our black box theatre.

Population(s) Served

The Highwood Theatre’s Student Theatre Program is designed to boost self-confidence, instill a sense of responsibility, and develop well-rounded theatre artists while creating a supportive, collaborative community. Highwood at School brings The Highwood Theatre’s unique model to children in area schools. A team of Highwood Theatre Teaching Artists will offer a selection of classes, workshops, and programs to children across the DC area to support and enhance existing curricula. From improv and musical theatre to acting, play writing, and full productions, exposing students to the creative, collaborative process of theatre inspires them and can ignite in them a life-long appreciation for theatre and the arts.

Population(s) Served

The goal of Your Theatre at Highwood is to welcome YOU into the creative process of theatre. At the most basic level, we want to hear your ideas, help you develop them, and make them come to life. Above all, however, we want to make sure the entire community has the opportunity to create and/or experience theatre in the best possible way.

Your Theatre provides a platform for the development of new ideas and new programs. Through our Open Source Theatre Project, we want to share those ideas and make them available to benefit different communities. We also provide a space for existing artists and organizations to collaborate, share ideas, and work together.

Your Theatre is a developmental program that, over time, hopes to create a hub for experimental, community-produced theatre in addition to bringing theatre to as many people as possible. We begin by hearing from you. What do you want? What ideas do you have? Where do you see theatre going in the coming years?

Charting impact

Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.

Community

Building community through theatre;
Everyone as members of an ensemble made up of the production cast, crew, band, design team, and leadership;
Social time built into programs to allow friendships to form offstage, benefiting performances onstage;
Artists supporting their peers as a critical piece of the team effort.

Process

Community members participating in many aspects of the theatrical process and organization;
Designing our own lights and sound, and building our own sets, props, and costumes allowing everyone to take ownership of the process and production;
Involving you at all levels of the organization, gaining exposure to the entire process of creating art;
Where everyone takes the process seriously working toward a professional result.

Creativity

People of different ages working together exploring, learning, and collaborating;
Intimate, flexible performance spaces allowing for the most creativity;
Everyone’s contributions are valued;
Anyone can do theatre.

The Highwood Theatre is a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting the performing arts through community-produced theatre.

The Highwood Theatre’s core value is “anyone can do theatre.” This guides our organization and all of our programs. We want not only to bring great theatre to the community, but also involve the community in the creation of great theatre. We are devoted to hearing everyone’s ideas, developing those ideas, and sharing them with the community. Whether it’s a new class for students or adults, a play or musical performance, or the wackiest theatre-related idea you can think of, we want to hear it and think about how to make it happen.

Through Your Theatre, The Highwood Theatre hopes to deepen community involvement in the creation of theatre and develop new, sustainable ideas in theatre. The Students’ Theatre involves students in all aspects of a theatre production, creating high quality performances that each student is proud of. Highwood at School brings The Highwood Theatre model to students in area schools through classes and productions, giving students the opportunity to develop as confident collaborators.
