Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Music Mentorship Program
Music teachers and social workers in the local K-12 school systems refer children most likely to benefit from the program (most come from low-income families). By sharing the gift of music and by using positive reinforcement, college students become role models who nurture pride and instill self-confidence in their mentees. This relationship is mutually beneficial for both teachers and children enrolled in the program. Kids learn the value of becoming a contributing member of their local community and develop discipline, responsibility, patience and confidence. Teachers learn to effectively communicate with children and parents, be encouraging and supportive mentors, and how to enable their students to succeed. Oversight of all the above is the responsibility of the Executive Director, the only paid employee of Musical Empowerment, with assistance from a team of college student leaders (volunteers).
Instrument Lending Program
Children enrolled in Musical Empowerment lessons who are unable to provide their own instrument are eligible to borrow one through the ILP. Students can borrow the instrument as long as they are enrolled in ME, and once they have participated in Musical Empowerment for three years, they have the opportunity to keep their instrument. ILP allows access to an instrument during the lesson period (academic year), and can be extended over the summer. Our instrument inventory consists donated and purchased instruments.
