Programs and results
What we aim to solve
Our organization is helping to address homeless horses. Over-breeding and the ability to ship horses to slaughter in Canada and Mexico leaves many horses with no where to go. Our organization specifically works with off-the-track thoroughbred racehorses.
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Social Club Initiative Gelding Program
Through grants and fundraising, we offer free/low-cost gelding clinics twice a year open to all equine breeds.
Thoroughbred Retraining and Adoption Program
Our main focus is on retraining and rehoming of thoroughbreds. Our thoroughbreds come straight off the track (mainly Finger Lakes Race Track) and through local ads (Craigslist, Facebook, etc). and are given downtime/rehab before being retrained to a career that suits their individual needs. We then adopt out our thoroughbreds with a no racing/no auction/no breeding contract that includes right of first refusal.
Thoroughbred Jubilee Benefit Horse Show
An all-thoroughbred benefit horse show to promote the athleticism and versatility of the breed. We had a day of riding education featuring a gymnastic clinic, private dressage lessons, and an obstacle demonstration as well as an adoption showcase the day before the horse show. The all-thoroughbred horse show had classes ranging from leadline to walk/trot through 2'9 hunters and 3' jumpers, including two T.I.P. classes.
Night Fight Rainbow Bridge Fund
Second Chance Thoroughbreds has limited funding available to help pay veterinary services for humane euthanasia of equines.

Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
Our goal is to help as many off the track thoroughbreds into new homes and new careers as we can; to provide a soft landing to horses at the end of their racing careers, to retrain thoroughbreds into new suitable careers based on individual strengths, to provide low-cost/free gelding clinics to address the issues of overpopulation and indiscriminate breeding, and to educate the public on the versatility of the breed.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
We take in thoroughbreds straight from the track (mainly Finger Lakes Race Track) and through urgent local ads (Craigslist, Facebook, etc.). We are also a part of Take The Lead, a thoroughbred placement program sponsored by the NY Thoroughbred Horseman's Association.
We contact former racing connections (owners, breeders, trainers) to ask for assistance in caring for and/or purchasing our thoroughbreds. Any funding we receive goes directly to our horses care including veterinary services, farrier work, dentistry, feeding and bedding.
We also write grants for funding to go towards horse care and gelding clinics.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
The thoroughbreds we take in are generally those that are at risk or have uncertain futures - need to be "moved fast," recent injuries, stallions/colts, underweight, or those priced low enough that they could potentially end up at auction (usually $500 or less).
Our executive director and her husband serve as the main caretakers for our thoroughbreds and live on the premises. Additionally, one board member lives a short distance down the road and can be called if needed. Other neighbors have farm equipment and land should any resources be needed in times of emergency.
We actively seek out grant sources to assist in financials but again, only maintain a number of horses that we can support without outside funding.
We have been accredited with the Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance since 2016. We are also a member of the NYTHA's Take The Lead Program. To increase our visibility, we list our thoroughbreds as part of A Home For Every Horse in collaboration with equine.com.
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
In the last 10 years, we have retrained and placed over 100 thoroughbreds into new homes. In 2021, 13 horses were adopted into new homes, and we currently have 8 horses in our program. We have community social programs including the Cool Moon Hay Bank, the Rainbow Ridge Fund and the Social Club Gelding Initiative.
