Mission

Postpartum Society of Florida supports new mothers transitioning from pregnancy to parenthood. We know healthy mothers are the foundations of healthy families. Our mission is to ease the stress of the perinatal adjustment period through parent and provider education, postpartum preparation classes, and new mother peer support programs. Recent medical research suggests that peer support in the postpartum period may reduce incidence of Postpartum Depression & Anxiety by 50% and significantly improve Maternal-Infant outcomes in the first year. What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

Partners, Parents & Personality

Bringing baby home brings changes, and those changes can cause conflict for parents right when they need each other's support the most. We know both clinically and practically that a lack of partner support is a major risk factor for Perinatal/Postpartum Depression and more. It's heartbreaking, but it doesn't have to be inevitable. With vetted, valuable, valid information about partners' personalities using the Jungian-Myers-Briggs Personality Type Theory, we know that we can ease new parents' adjustment pregnancy to parenthood and help PREVENT Postpartum Depression & Distress from isolating moms and dads from support, and escalating out of control. This three-session Program, Partners, Parents & Personality, is the only specialized, private perinatal communication program for couples designed to reduce the incidence and severity of Postpartum/Perinatal Depression & Distress, and is free to all expectant and new parents (up to one year post-birth) in the community.

Population(s) Served

Establish scheduled drop-in play, quiet & work hours for new moms at our headquartered office location at 1958 Prospect Street where moms can play with their babies, take a break and socialize with other moms, and/or work on their resume or business responsibilities out of the overwhelming home environment. *Budget-$200/month

Population(s) Served

Secure placement of PPSF original peer support (SISTER) book, FROM BUMP TO GRIND in 70% of all OB and Pediatrician offices in Sarasota & Manatee Counties in order to lend support to new mothers, raise awareness among clinicians, and spread the word about PPSF services.

Population(s) Served

Featuring local musician Zachary Johnson on acoustic guitar & PPSF Executive Director Sarah Workman Checcone on vocals, MiTunes(R) is a wholly original, innovative approach to Postpartum Stress & Distress awareness, prevention & bridge to treatment. MiTunes(R) includes 15 traditional children's melodies with lyrics tailored to Post-birth recovery and adjustment, plus two original PPDistress screening and treatment tunes, "You Are Not Alone" and "Fake it 'Til You Make It," with music and lyrics by Sarah and Zach.OUR GOAL: Distribute electronic copies of this collection to every mom in Sarasota & Manatee counties through our area hospitals, OB/Gyn offices, pediatricians, and other perinatal providers. The new moms will be able to scan a QR Code at any of these locations with their smart phones, and the code will take them to our MiTunes(R) web page where they can download the MiTunes(R) music and view complete information about our Peer Support resources as well as those of community partners in order to reduce isolation and escalation of postpartum stress & crisis, and improve maternal-infant outcomes in the first year.

Population(s) Served

Send one interested OB, one pediatrician, and one mental health professional from Manatee, Sarasota, DeSoto and/or Charlotte Counties to the Postpartum Support International Provider Certification course (3-4 days) on scholarship.
