PURPLE

Fostering lesbian and womyn's community initiatives

Lansing, MI   |  http://www.purple4womyn.org

Mission

Purple is a feminist umbrella organization for activities and initiatives that promote lesbian and womyn's community. We adopt appropriate projects proposed and primarily staffed by others as projects of Purple Inc., consulting with and advising the organizers, and extending to the projects the benefits of our tax-deductible non-profit status and the use of our resources. In this way, we stimulate and foster activities that immediately benefit lesbian/womyn's community and serve as an incubator for promising initiatives that need a boost to start up but may grow and develop into independent entities.

What we aim to solve

SOURCE: Self-reported by organization

Lesbians and womyn are still disadvantaged and are indeed facing a loss of recognition as a distinct population with correspondingly distinct issues. Purple means to further activism that promotes recognition of our community and furthers solutions to our isolation and oppression.

What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

The Lesbian Legacies Endowment: Womyn’s Cultural/Political Activism in Second Wave Feminism.

This endowment will support, build and make accessible important materials in the Michigan State University Library Special Collections on lesbian political and cultural activism in the last half-century. The primary goal of the fund is to create opportunities for researchers to come and use the collections for research, further activism, and artistic activities.

Purple is also now actively soliciting proposals from local and regional womyn imagining or already working on other nonprofit initiatives to further the well-being of lesbians, womyn and our community itself. We are open to addressing a wide range of concerns under that description: education, culture, health, civil rights and more fit under our umbrella. The relationship between Purple and a candidate project would be determined by the nature of the project and the needs of both Purple and the participants. It could range from Purple’s adopting an initiative as its own, staffed by the womyn who proposed it, to a formal fiscal sponsorship.

We are especially interested in fostering initiatives by and for members who are under-represented and under-resourced: womyn of color, young womyn, differently-abled womyn, low-income womyn, and others.
