What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

Pit Stop Program

The Pit Stop Program offers spay and neuter assistance to any pit bull/pit mix owner that needs help. There are no income restrictions to qualify for this program and pet owners can receive help as long as there are funds available. Pit bulls are entering animal shelters at an alarming rate, and through no fault of their own, are the most difficult breed of dog to adopt out. The lucky ones often languish for months in shelters, the unlucky ones are euthanized immediately without ever having a chance at a new home. Sadly, pit bulls also face quality of life issues as they are prone to abuse, neglect and are used for dogfighting. Pit bulls/mixes are a huge part of the pet overpopulation problem and getting a handle on the pit bull situation can only ease the burden animal shelters are facing by the huge influx of this type of dog, and help restore the respect and dignity of this wonderful breed of dog.

Population(s) Served

The Canine Spay-Neuter Assistance Program (K9-SNAP) offers spay and neuter assistance for any breed/mixed breed dog/puppy, other than pit bulls and pit mixes. The goal of the program is to help spay dogs that are continuously having litters of puppies, to help in situations where there are several unaltered dogs in the home, and to assist low income and financially struggling dog owners. There are no income restrictions to qualify for spay-neuter assistance for your dog or puppy, as long as we have funding available. Currently the K9-SNAP is offered only to Manistee County residents due to limited funding.
