What we aim to solve

SOURCE: Self-reported by organization

Friends of the Haywood County Animal Shelter, was formed as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, several years ago at the request of the Haywood County Commissioners. The purpose was and is to facilitate a public-private partnership to design and build a modern animal sheltering facility to replace the antiquated one in use at present and to provide on-going support for the animals of Haywood County, North Carolina.

Support New Haywood County Animal Shelter

Through a combination of public and private support, the new Haywood County Animal Shelter will satisfy our community’s needs for the next 25 years and beyond. A federal loan of $3.4 million has been secured to build the facility, and will be funded at a cost of approximately $2.30 per Haywood County resident each year out of sales tax dollars. To be clear, the facility will NOT be funded by property taxes. The Friends are committed to raising $1 million by October 2017 to furnish the facilities with the essential items and equipment needed to be fully functional, welcoming and efficient. We have already raised a significant amount. You can help us bridge the gap and open the shelter.

Charting impact

Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.

The Friends want to give you an update about the progress at the new Haywood County Animal Shelter which is nearing completion and to let you know that we are “getting there” in our efforts to meet our $1M goal for the equipment, furnishings and supplies needed for operations at the new shelter. We pledged to raise these funds to ensure that the new shelter operates as effectively as possible.

The Friends have run a capital campaign to raise the funds to meet our goal of supporting the building of a new shelter and the animals that it will support. We have done this through, fundraising, grants, and soliciting support from individuals and corporations.

The goal is to provide the “Five Freedoms” for dogs and cats ending up in the shelter through no fault of their own.
Freedom from Hunger and Thirst
Freedom from Discomfort
Freedom from Pain or Disease
Freedom to Express Normal Behavior
Freedom from Fear and Distress

We have an all-volunteer board, members of which have worked for several years toward making this building a reality. Questions about our donations are welcomed and encouraged—we love talking about what we do and why—and we thank all of our donors who have helped us come so far. We will continue to support and partner with Haywood County. We know the animals we love, and support will be well served for years to come in our new animal services facility. We look forward to obtaining continued support as we reach our current goal and then move into the future with our partnership for the animals.

To date, the donated funds, received and pledged total almost $800,000, so we are “getting there”. The new shelter was opened in April 2018.
See indicators above for statistics.

Next, we will continue to raise the additional funds to meet our $1M goal and then we will continue our support efforts as Friends of the Haywood County shelter to meet our mission.
• To raise funds to assist in the building of a new public animal shelter in Haywood County
• To educate the public and raise public awareness of animal needs
• To fund other projects as deemed appropriate for animal needs in Haywood County
