Making Enlightened Society Possible

Washington, DC   |  dc.shambhala.org

Mission

Shambhala is a global community of people inspired by the principle that every human being has a fundamental nature of basic goodness. This nature, our innate wisdom, can be developed so that it benefits our own lives and helps meet the many challenges facing the world.

Shambhala welcomes people from all walks of life, faiths, and backgrounds. They come together to practice meditation, gather, and celebrate in order to develop a global culture that cultivates dignity and sanity in an increasingly chaotic and stressful world.

Shambhala is a not-for-profit organization funded by donations from its members and supporters, and by program fees.

Learn to Meditate

This workshop is devoted to group meditation instruction and guidance suitable for both first-time visitors and more experienced meditators, It includes Q&A and discussion, and is followed by refreshments.

Population(s) Served

Everyone is welcome on Thursday evenings to meditate together, hear a dharma talk, and engage in discussion. Talk topics change each week, but each provides a distinct insight into how we can awaken to our “basic goodness”; that is, have a sense of intrinsic dignity and completeness in dealing with our everyday lives which promotes kindness, strength, and wisdom both in ourselves and in how we relate to others in society.

Each Thursday evening begins with a silent, group meditation session from 7-7:30 in the Main Shrine Room followed by a talk/presentation and group discussion. Those who are new to meditation should plan to arrive at 7pm when a Shambhala-certified instructor provides a brief introduction to meditation practice in another room until the beginning of the talk and discussion at 7:30. After the talk, you're invited to continue the conversation in our reception area over a cup of tea and light snacks.

The Way of Shambhala is an extensive path of training in authentic meditation practices and wisdom teachings for anyone interested in pursuing such training. This program of courses and weekend retreats offers an experiential overview of practices, teachings, contemplative arts, and physical disciplines rooted in the ancient traditions of Shambhala and Vajrayana Buddhism.

The program is open to people of all religious backgrounds or no religious background. It is recommended for new and experienced meditators as well as those looking to enrich their personal spiritual path and social action.

Charting impact

Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.

Our organization provides services that address the need in our society to feel whole, worthy, confident and dignified.

We offer instruction in meditation from basic to advanced level. We also offer workshops that develop confidence in innate human qualities of goodness, kindness, wisdom, and strength. We work with various sectors of society such as families and children as well as addicts and those in recovery.

Our instructors undergo years of rigorous training as educators and counselors in meditation. Typically before attaining such a position, one has demonstrated that they have undergone hundreds of hours of meditation practice, including 4 weeks of meditation retreat, several intensive programs at regional meditation centers, and have received specialized training for becoming a meditation instructor.

With the exception of the Executive Director, all of the members of Shambhala contribute to the organization's activities on a volunteer basis. They come from a wide variety of professional fields and bring their experience and expertise to bear in carrying out their endeavors for the organization.

We have managed to maintain our operations and grow in the DC area since 1973, making us the second oldest Buddhist "church" in the area. We have trained hundreds if not thousands of people to meditate and to feel comfortable in their own skin, while becoming more compassionate towards others.
We have developed a thriving support service for people suffering from addiction and who are on the road to recovery.
We aspire to increase our reach within the DC metropolitan area by eventually purchasing a building of our own and offering our services in more parts of the metropolitan area.
