What we aim to solve
Nevada ranks in the bottom of states in regards to education. Northern Nevada, specifically, has a large number of tech companies and companies that utilize tech in their business model coming to the area. Our students are unprepared to be a part of the future work force that is and will be needed. The STEM differential for a high school graduate in the state of Nevada is over 40%. Area companies have amazing certification programs for high school graduates that will allow the to make over $100k/year; however, these programs are seeing participants unable to complete the math based portions. To prepare area students, from all economic levels, to be employable, we need to improve their math skills. We do this by getting them excited about math and that means teaching them that math is more than calculating; math is creative, logical problem solving; there is no single right way to solve problems; thinking differently and learning to embrace challenge is essential.
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Competition Math Team
Our Competition Team is composed of students in grades 7 through 12 that want to work with other area students to creatively solve complex math problems and compete as a team. The Competition Team participates at the Western Site of the American Regions Mathematics League (ARML) each year. Competition Team members are required to work well together, contribute a minimum of 10 service hours to the benefit of the team, and must attend school (or if home schooled live) in Nevada close enough to Reno/Sparks to reasonably attend practices on a regular basis.

MathRocks! Contest Series
MathRocks! is a series of social, team based math contests for students in grades 1-12. We offer 6 regular season MathRocks! contests, all of which are written by our staff and volunteers. Online option for students who students who qualify due to illness, geography, or other qualifying reasons. There are 4 individual rounds for students participating in-person and online. In-person participants also compete in a team round with 2-3 other students. Awards are given for to top performers for each contest plus trophies and medals given to top overall season performers at the end of the year.
Math Camps
Math camps are offered over the summer. Target grades vary by summer and week but most often students in grades 3-8. Focus is on topics common in math competitions but rarely seen in class. While interesting and challenging, most of these topics provide practice on classroom skills, strengthen understanding, and increase confidence in school.
Our Competition Team members are instrumental in the success of these camps. They serve as planners, instructors, small team leaders, and mentors.

Family Math Nights
Family Math Nights are fun events where kids are exposed to math as the creative application of logic to solve complete problems. The math and logic focused activities include games, logic puzzles, art, and more. Activities are designed and selected for their ability to contribute to a students understanding of foundational math concepts, ability to logically organize their ideas, develop their problem-solving skills, and correct general misunderstandings about math.
Join us for a fun night of games, puzzles and art projects. From fun math challenges to hands on puzzles, watch your childs love for math grow as they embark on brain teasing activities made for all ages. This event runs about 2 hours and includes an activity booklet that families can work on at home.
This is a volunteer heavy program.

Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
We are aiming to increase:
*the overall math level of all area students
*the number of girls that pursue math and math related degrees, fields, and careers
*the math related opportunities of our low income students by doing everything we can to not allow money to be a reason a student is unable to participate in one of our programs
*the number of area students prepared to pursue STEM related fields and careers after high school
And improve the math culture in our area schools.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
* We focus on math being the creative use of logic to solve complex problems
* We expose kids to vast number of math topics they wouldn't otherwise see
* We present them with problems that challenge them & push them to really think
* We encourage working as a team
* We have created a place where liking math is socially cool
* We provide scholarships to students with financial need to participate in our programs
* Our Competition Team (CT) members are required as part of the CT to volunteer 5 hours towards improving the math culture. Most of our CT members volunteer at math camp as either an instructor or being a team leader and working with a small group of 2-3 campers. While 5 hours is the minimum, most of our CT members work between 30 and 45 once they see the impact they have and every year we have a number that volunteer over 100 hours at camps, running math clubs, and even writing math contests.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
We have a strong, active board of directors that work well together and with our ED. We make a point to be actively seeking future board members. We also have a great group of community volunteers and have several local companies that highly encourage their employees to be involved in what we are doing. This includes instructors as our local community college who has started volunteering their time to work with our CT kids.
We have opted to take the challenges that COVID has presented and turn them into long term opportunities. We have moved our contests online and, while we look forward to resuming in-person contests for local students, we plan to retain an online option for students who live in rural areas and who are unable to attend due to illness. Additionally, we can now offer the opportunity for teachers of low income students to run the contest while at school when the students have access to technology.
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
Our Competition Team continues to draw over 30 area students in grade 7 - 12 who practices for 2 hours a week most Sundays throughout the school year and want to work on challenging problems as part of a team. This program runs 45-55% female.
This is our 6th year holding math contests throughout the year for area students and, with moving them online, they are now accessible to more students including those in rural Nevada. Students who have gone through our programs have continued on to attend: Cal Tech, Berkeley, Stanford, IIT, Harvey Mudd, Portland State, MIT, U of Nevada Reno, and more.
Next:
Work on our new program for high at-risk students with little to no support at home to encourage and inspire them to develop their math skills.
Increase the number of rural Nevada students participating in our contests.
