Mission

TDMP is working in Jamaica to educate, prevent and manage type 2 diabetes. We work with prediabetic and diabetic individuals to manage diabetes. Recently we are focused on prevention strategies for primary school children. To that endeavor, we've found that improving food access for children in our project area is urgent. We have a student population of about 1,120 children of which a third of them have food access issues. We started a breakfast program but due to insufficient funds, we discontinued the program and are helping the schools to become sustainable. In February 2019, volunteers from Minnesota will travel to the project area to start the first schoolyard farm of chickens and vegetables. This is a pilot project after which we plan to expand to all four schools in the project.

Diabetes Management

This program involves working with diabetic individuals in the districts of Wakefield, Bunkers Hill and Deeside to increase type 2 diabetes literacy, the understanding of the disease; encouraging frequent and consistent blood sugar testing; managing their diets; increasing physical activities and improving their diabetes literacy especially during their trips to the doctors.
Presently we are trying to raise funds to build a wellness center to house medical facilities and exercise equipment for adults and children.

Population(s) Served

This program focuses on primary school children and have four primary schools in Jamaica. They include, Wakefield, Unity, Hastings and one newly added, Bounty. Initially we provided some assistance towards a breakfast program but are now focusing on sustainability and in February 2019, will start the first schoolyard garden project at the Wakefield primary school. We will building a coop for 400 -500 chickens and planting some vegetables and hopefully some fruit trees. We will work with all the schools towards a cooperative sharing of duties and the products from the farms.

Population(s) Served

This program focuses primarily on children's sports and is mainly through donated sports equipment, primarily baseball equipment. This one is challenging and we are working to get some athelets from Minnesota and elsewhere in the US to visit the area to train the trainers. We are in desperate need of volunteers.
