What we aim to solve

SOURCE: Self-reported by organization

"A disability in and of itself is not a tragedy. It is an occasion to provoke a tragedy" (Vygotsky, 1993). For children with hearing loss, too often this disability turns into a language disorder and encroaches upon language deprivation syndrome. Griffin Center for Inspired Instruction works with staff on the front line providing needed support for these children. The list includes audiologists, speech therapists, teachers, teacher's assistants, parents, other family members, and child care workers...just to name a few. We work to help these practitioners work more effectively and efficiently as children with hearing loss are already behind. They need to learn a year and half of information in one year's time to have a chance at catching up.

Our programs

What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

Early Hearing Detection and Intervention

Griffin Center provides support to the Oregon State EHDI program. The goal of the EHDI program is to assure that all Oregon newborns receive a hearing screening by one month of age, infants who refer on newborn screening receive diagnostic evaluation by three months of age and infants diagnosed with loss are enrolled into early intervention services by six months of age.

Population(s) Served
Infants and toddlers
People with hearing impairments

Sound Start is a comprehensive care center that provides young children with hearing needs and their families 360 degrees of support as they traverse the often unfamiliar and challenging divide between medicine and education. Given that most children with hearing needs are born to hearing parents, we also aim to bridge the gap between hearing and deaf worlds. Sound Start primarily serves children birth to age five as this is the critical period for language acquisition and social emotional development. Our speech language pathologist provides verbal and auditory therapy both on-site and via telemedicine. Of equal importance, our pediatric audiologists monitor and support children’s auditory technology (i.e., hearing aids and cochlear implants) maximizing auditory access to the greatest extent possible.
