Fur Fun Rescue

From foster homes to forever homes.

Lisbon, IA   |  http://www.furfunrescue.org

Mission

Fur Fun Rescue is an all-volunteer, foster-based rescue. We save dogs from high-kill shelters, and seek neglected dogs with medical needs when shelters or owners won’t or can’t pay for their care. Our goal is to match dogs in need, fosters who care, and homes looking for that perfect addition. Medical needs of our dogs are addressed. They are vaccinated, spay/neutered, microchipped, treated if needed for heartworm, and given heartworm/flea preventatives. Fosters teach dogs basic obedience, and correct behavioral issues. We then match dogs with carefully screened adopters via phone, meet-and-greet, & home visits. After adoption, we’re here to answer questions and offer training tips, and if for any reason, an owner cannot keep their dog, we commit in our adoption contracts to take it back.

Our programs

What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

Shelter Support

Animal Control and local shelters call us to take medical needs dogs that we can care for, but they cannot. This frees up their kennel space to save more dogs. We reach out to local shelters to mentor them, sharing resources (dog food and supplies) and rescue management advice. We also work closely with local and national transporters to move dogs from high-kill shelters to our rescue and others in IA.

Population(s) Served

Incoming dogs are placed in well-screened, experienced foster homes where they get immediate love and a home environment. After dogs decompress from stress, they learn social skills from their humans, and how to be a dog by watching other dogs. Our foster families are driven by passion for their work, which often involves special care (e.g., meds, frequent feeding, physical therapy).

Population(s) Served

To treat our many special needs dogs, we developed a diverse alliance of veterinary care facilities. Two in Cedar Rapids spay and neuter, and one in Anamosa is our “primary care” provider for many low-cost medical treatments. Major medical care (non-complex and complex) is given by veterinary specialty hospitals in Cedar Rapids, Des Moines, and Madison, WI.

Population(s) Served

Thorough screening of applications, applicants, and their households (especially other dogs and cats) helps ensure successful matches. We take time to do it right, and place each dog into its forever home. We try to adopt all dogs within 2 hr of Cedar Rapids, IA, to facilitate doing a home visit as part of each adoption.

Population(s) Served

We provide extensive education to the local community (up to 60 calls/day, a service many rescues do not provide). We advise owners about surrenders; offer dog training (sometimes in home); answer dog questions (about food, meds, behavior); fix fences; help look for lost dogs (lending traps and helping search); report observed animal abuse; and more.
