Butterfly Garden

The butterfly garden at Summerfield Park in Lakewood Ranch (Manatee County) is a place to enjoy watching butterflies and other wildlife, to teach children how to observe nature and to learn that not every insect that eats plants is a pest. Our plants are Florida-friendly and many are native plants. We practice and teach Florida-friendly, environmentally sustainable gardening techniques in our garden. About half the plants in our garden are host plants so that our human visitors can observe first hand that a successful butterfly garden will contain well-chewed plants. We have placed permanent signs explaining the nine principles of Florida-friendly gardening and one large sign illustrating the butterfly life cycle. Our garden visitors include 23 varieties of butterflies and skippers, bees, red shouldered hawks, jays and other song birds as well as lizards. Occasionally a gator will cool off in the adjacent pond.  Our garden is especially popular with residents who are newcomers to Florida and to families with small children.

Population(s) Served

Gardeners Out East offers seven educational programs per year, including lectures, field trips and hands on experiences in the areas of Florida-friendly gardening, floral design, landscape design and environmental issues. Recent topics include palms, Earth Box gardening, floral arrangements from grocery store flowers, gopher tortoises, herbs for wellness, and growing vegetables in containers in Florida. Typical attendance at a lecture or hands on experience is about half club members and half members of the public. Field trips tend to be mainly members.
