What we aim to solve

SOURCE: Self-reported by organization

The rate of teen pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections among teenagers in Georgia exceeds the national average. In Richmond County, the rate per capita is among the highest in the state. These statistics underscore the fact that our youth are participating in risk behaviors that may negatively affect their ability to complete high school, gain a degree in higher education, or and raise their child in a financially stable environment. Additionally, the care of children born to teen parents often becomes the burden of local and state tax payers to cover the costs of welfare programs and resources that teen parents access totaling millions of dollars per year.

Charting impact

Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.

GrantWest Enterprises provides evidence-based teen pregnancy prevention education to youth who attend middle schools in Richmond County. Our goals are 1) to reach as many young people between the ages of 13-19 with curriculums designed to help them focus on careers, develop a positive future self image, recognize the barriers that could get in the way of their dreams, and develop negotiation skills that would help them avoid risk behaviors that lead to teen pregnancy, STIs and early sexual activity; and, 2) to decrease the number of teen pregnancies in Richmond County.

Our strategies include:

1. Training a team of facilitators in the proper implementation of a variety of teen pregnancy prevention curriculums.
2. Identifying community partners to participate by providing implementation sites, in-kind services, or other resources.
3. Recruitment of youth between the ages of 13-19 in school, community and faith-based environments for participation in the TPP program.
4. Providing information to parents, city officials, and other stakeholders to help them understand the program.

GrantWest Enterprises employs a team of seven facilitators who are trained in a variety of curricula to include: Project AIM, Making Proud Choices, Making a Difference, and SIHLE. These facilitators represent approximately 36 years of combined experience in delivering teen pregnancy prevention education to the youth of Richmond County, GA. We receive grant funding to cover the majority of the expenses involved. The remainder of the funding is raised through donations and fund raising.

To date, we have reached over 1500 youth with direct services and over 2300 youth and parents with social and printed media. We have remained in the public schools of Richmond County for 4 years and implemented with various community organizations that we continue to work with four years later.
