Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Student Financial Aid Program
The Student Financial Aid program was established in 1961 to help promote the study of medicine and dentistry. Since that time, nearly 1200 students have received more than $1.7 million in loans. The Delaware Academy of Medicine has supported hundreds of medical and dental students. To be considered for financial aid, a student must be a U.S. Citizen or permanent resident and have at least one year of residency in Delaware.
These funds are made available through special endowments of the Academy/DPHA, which have been designated for this specific purpose since the time of the Academy's creation in 1930. Certain endowments support dental students, women entering the field of medicine, and children of practicing Delaware physicians and dentists. Other funds are less restrictive and allow the student loan committee to support any applicant who demonstrates financial need. Loans are usually in the range of $2,500 to $8,000 annually.
Delaware Mini Medical School
The Delaware Academy of Medicine offers this free lecture series for adults of all ages and high school students to learn about important trends in medicine and health, as well as to provide insight into different pathways into the healthcare field. Faculty provide in-depth lectures on important issues and advances in medicine and research, as well as their journey to their current role. Participants will have the opportunity to ask questions after each lecture. There are no tests or grades. Participants who attend all six sessions will receive a Certificate of Achievement, and students attending all six lectures will be inducted into the Delaware Youth Medical Academy. No previous medical training is required.
Delaware Health Force
Delaware Health Force (DHF) is a public/private partnership between the State of Delaware and the Delaware Academy of Medicine / Delaware Public Health Association (Academy/DPHA) (https://dehealthforce.org). Seed funding for DHF was provided by the Delaware Health Care Commission and from Academy/DPHA internal fund endowments. Major grant funding has been provided by the State of Delaware's Department of Labor through the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) pandemic relief funds.
DHF has four programmatic areas: Healthcare Workforce Research and Analytics, Graduate Medical School Expansion, Delaware Mini Medical School Expansion, and a student financial aid loan program. The SFA program is geared towards students wishing to join the healthcare workforce in key areas of need.
Delaware Journal of Public Health
The Delaware Journal of Public Health is published five times per year, and is the signature peer-reviewed journal of the Academy/DPHA. The DJPH is an electronic-only publication (https://djph.org), produced to be platform-agnostic (visible on any device with any operating system as long as it has internet access), and dynamic with links out to other resources. Unlike a hardcopy publication, the DJPH can connect directly to other resources, studies, events, etc. as determined by the authors. We believe this model is in keeping with the times and patterns of access by our readership. It is also eco-friendly, and respects limited resources, and is PubMed accredited.
There is NO COST to access the Journal for any interested reader.
There is NO EMBARGO on reading the most recent issue.
There are NO COSTS associated with submitting an article for review, or article processing costs.
Delaware Youth Medical Academy
Delaware Youth Medical Academy (DYMA) is a new merit-based program of the Academy/DPHA's Delaware Mini Medical School initiative for middle, junior, and high school students (with the potential of undergraduate students to work in a mentorship capacity). Each Session of Delaware Mini Medical School attended is worth 5 online points and a session-specific digital badge. Attending an entire six-session series (or a total of six sessions across multiple series) merits 30 points and six session-specific badges on various topics.
After attending six sessions, students will become eligible for a DYMA Certificate. To unlock the certificate, students will be asked to author a reflection paper. The specifics of this paper will change from series to series, and will not be released in advance.
DYMA events and workshops are still being developed.
Student Internship
The Academy/DPHA is dedicated to its mission of educating the next generation of public health and health providers in Delaware while promoting a health in all policies approach to public health. To further this mission, the Academy/DPHA partners with educational institutions throughout the state; works with students of many different backgrounds and interests (health sciences, anthropology, business, law, health care economics, media and communication, etc) to further their education and spark their interest in the field of public health; and provides learners of all ages and backgrounds a unique and stimulating opportunity to discover the role public health plays in our Delaware community. In order to apply for a student internship position with the Academy/DPHA, the student must be a student of an academic institution (high school, college, university, or graduate school).
Immunization Coalition of Delaware
The mission of the ICD is to bring together local, state and community organizations and individuals to promote education about vaccine preventable diseases and new vaccines, with the goal of improving access and vaccination rates throughout the lifespan.
The ICD is a diverse group of passionate, energetic, and committed partners working together to ensure that no one in Delaware suffers from vaccine preventable illnesses. We believe this can be achieved through focusing our efforts on education, advocacy, and access.
Delaware Chronic Disease Coalition (DCDC)
The mission of this program is to provide a reliable resource of information about the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of chronic disease for all Delawareans; and provide ongoing support for those living with chronic disease.

- We review compensation data across the organization (and by staff levels) to identify disparities by race.
- We seek individuals from various race backgrounds for board and executive director/CEO positions within our organization.
- We have community representation at the board level, either on the board itself or through a community advisory board.
- We help senior leadership understand how to be inclusive leaders with learning approaches that emphasize reflection, iteration, and adaptability.
- We engage everyone, from the board to staff levels of the organization, in race equity work and ensure that individuals understand their roles in creating culture such that one’s race identity has no influence on how they fare within the organization.
