Leading Social Entrepreneurs

Ashoka invests in people. We search the world for leading
social entrepreneurs and at the launch stage, provide these
entrepreneurs—Ashoka Fellows—a living stipend for an average of three years,
allowing them to focus full-time on building their institutions and spreading
their ideas. We also provide our Fellows with a global support network of their
peers and partnerships with professional consultants. Once elected to the
Ashoka Fellowship, Fellows benefit from this community for life.

Population(s) Served

Ashoka Fellows working together are creating a network of
incalculable power. All around the world, Ashoka facilitates collaborations of
Fellows so that they can learn from one another, share valuable knowledge and
insights, and leave better equipped to advance their work.

As a result of global collaborations, Ashoka is able to distill the most
effective patterns and unify them into a "mosaic”— a synthesis of the
commonalities and intersections of key principles that guide Fellows’
individual solutions. These overarching mosaics are then disseminated globally,
and form the basis of our programmatic initiatives specific to each field of
work, such as youth development or the environment.

In this way, group entrepreneurship not only helps Fellows
become more successful, but it also helps Ashoka identify cutting edge trends
and implement them more broadly

Population(s) Served

In order to succeed and become sustainable, social
entrepreneurs—much like business entrepreneurs—require support structures
tailored to their needs. Ashoka is building an infrastructure that supports the
growth and expansion of the field of social entrepreneurship, including seed
financing and capital, bridges to the business and academic sectors, and
strategic partnerships that deliver social and financial value.

Ashoka has long recognized the importance of collaboration
with other sectors, particularly business, whose models of competition and
innovation provide critical lessons for citizen organizations. Our work in
this area is helping close the historical gap between the business and civil
society, creating important avenues for integration and synergy between both
communities.

Population(s) Served

Ashoka works to define and strengthen the field of social entrepreneurship through Idea Spread and Education programs, including spreading the innovations of both individual social entrepreneurs and those developed cooperatively among social entrepreneurs working on common or related problems.  This includes publications, professional training of social entrepreneurs in communications, and Ashoka's web presence.
