What we aim to solve

SOURCE: Self-reported by organization

The Catholic church's discriminatory teachings and policies negatively impact the lives of LGBTQIA+ people, families, and allies across the US and around the world. People are denied the human right to follow the religious practices of their choosing, face negative outcomes due to oppressive structures and marginalization, and are denied equal access to services and protection of their rights and dignity. We are working to build a more inclusive Catholic church, which could impact people across the realms of education, health care, civil rights, housing, social services, and supportive spiritual community.

Spiritual Support

We provide affirming spiritual support, both in more than 35 local areas and nationally online, to LGBTQIA+ and Ally Catholics, and to anyone who worships with us in goodwill. We offer Catholic liturgy (Mass), sacraments, prayer services, seasonal celebrations (e.g., Lent, Advent, Easter, Pride), educational programs, and Gospel-based service opportunities.

Charting impact

Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.

We seek change in the teachings, practices, and services of the Catholic church as it impacts LGBTQIA+ people and allies. We work for justice, equality, and full inclusions in all areas of religious and civil life.

DignityUSA offers affirming spiritual community that afford unconditional welcome to people of all gender identities and sexual orientation, as well as faith-based advocacy supporting equality and justice for the LGBTQIA+ community.

With over 55 years of experience, members throughout the United States, and deeply committed volunteers and staff, we have credibility, knowledge, and the commitment to keep working towards the achievement of our mission.

Our organization has birthed a global movement of LGBTQIA+-supportive Catholics. We have seen dramatic increases in religious, especially Catholic support, for full inclusion of the LGBTQIA+ community in our church, for civil rights protections, and for changes in official church teachings and practices over our 55+ years of work, and especially since the 1990s. In the US and most western countries, over 70% of Catholics now support legal protections for marriage equality, transgender equality, service access, etc. We have spearheaded the development of a network of LGBTQ+-friendly parishes and Catholic communities, supported the emergence of Catholic Queer theology, and been a consistent voice across many media platforms for a positive Catholic view of LGBTQIA+ people.
