Mission

The goals of the Edlavitch DCJCC are to preserve and strengthen Jewish identity, heritage, tradition, and values through a wide variety of social, cultural, recreational, and educational programs and services. The Center accomplishes these goals in ways that reflect the unique location and role of the Center in the nation's Capital and the many contributions of the American Jewish community in the United States.

While the Center is designed primarily to fulfill the needs of the Jewish community and to preserve and enhance the culture, traditions, ethics, and philosophy of Judaism, membership and participation in activities of the Center are open to all residents of the metropolitan area. The Edlavitch DCJCC is a member of the Jewish Community Center Association (JCCA), a beneficiary agency of the Jewish Federation of Greater Washington, and a designated agency of the United Way.

Jewish Living

Jewish learning comes in so many forms for all ages. Regular class offerings include Hebrew, Introduction to Judaism, and Love & Religion, our interfaith couples workshop.

The Morris Cafritz Center for Community Service’s award-winning volunteer program, Behrend Builders, was established to meet the critical needs of Washington’s low-income housing community and to supplement D.C.’s overextended social service agencies.

Our interfaith programming encompasses the many aspects of a relationship that combines religions, including heritage, tradition and the spirituality of both partners. The forum allows interfaith couples and families to explore myriad issues.

Provides volunteer and social justice opportunities for adults, students and families. Options include: helping the homeless and/or low-income, preparing food for the hungry, gardening and farming projects, painting and shelter repair and community-wide volunteer days. SSL approved organization.

Programming for singles and couples in their 20s and 30s. Cultural, educational, networking and social events; Shabbat dinners; holiday celebrations; couples club; interfaith programming; programs co-sponsored with other community organizations.

Founded in 2006 by Stuart S. Kurlander, GLOE is the first and only full-time GLBT program at any Jewish Community Center (JCC) in North America. GLOE holds around 40 programs and events every year, in a wide range of areas - in the arts and literature, community service, holidays and spirituality, social justice, and, of course, social events - and running the gamut of queer Jewish identities.

The EDCJCC has started a new initiative to provide programming for individuals with disabilities with varying degrees of disabilities. We will provide programming for all ages including but not limited to adults, teens, young adults, and elementary age children. The EDCJCC strives to provide programming in the areas of social opportunity, a theater class, community service projects, and fitness classes. We would like to expand to include workshops, cooking classes, social skills classes, swimming classes, and much more. In addition, the EDCJCC will provide a more inclusive environment for our existing programs.

Our Henry S. Reich Health and Fitness Center promotes a healthy body as a not only a Jewish value, but a human value. We want to engage your mind, body, and spirit in a community friendly setting for everybody.

Gives seniors the opportunity to continue to live healthy, active and independent lives through exercise, classes and weekly Shabbat celebrations, in addition to daily kosher lunch. Reservations appreciated. Walk-ins welcome.

Summer fun for elementary and teen campers. Specialty camps offered and range from concentrations on theater, outdoor adventure, LEGO, chess and more. CIT programs and community service camps (with the ability to earn SSL credits) also available.

The Parenting Center provides families with the support, guidance, and enrichment needed to raise young children in the city. Classes and programs are designed to meet the developmental and social needs of infants and toddlers (newborns through age 4), to create meaningful bonding experiences for caregivers, and to provide practical skills and solutions, advice, and community-building opportunities for parents and parents-to-be.

Theater J, the nation’s largest and most prominent professional Jewish theater company, produces a full season of theater annually that celebrates, explores and struggles with the complexities and nuances of both the Jewish experience and the universal human condition.

One of the largest and most respected Jewish film festivals in North America, the Washington Jewish Film Festival (WJFF) is an international exhibition of cinema that celebrates the diversity of Jewish history, culture and experience through the moving image. In addition to the annual festival, the WJFF presents an ongoing, year-round film series.

The Washington Jewish Music Festival is the flagship of the Edlavitch DCJCC’s year-round music program. Established in 1999 with a lead gift from the Howard and Geraldine Polinger Family Foundation, the WJMF promotes a broader appreciation of Jewish culture and connects the Greater Washington, D.C. community through music. WJMF presents extraordinary performing artists who preserve and invigorate Jewish music in contemporary culture. Through collaborations, educational programming and free events, the Festival actively engages people throughout the greater DC community in cross-cultural dialogue.
