Mission

The National Academy of Social Insurance is a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization made up of 1,200 of the nation's leading experts on Social Security, Medicare, Unemployment Insurance, and Workers' Compensation, as well as related issues, including caregiving, long-term care, Medicaid, workforce issues, and poverty. Our mission is to promote understanding and informed policymaking on social insurance and related programs through research, public education, training, and the open exchange of ideas. Why is social insurance important? Social insurance protects workers and their families against economic insecurity caused by: loss of income from work due to old-age, death, disability, or illness; the cost of health care and caregiving.

What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

How do we better support families in meeting evolving care needs over the life cycle?

Some states across the U.S. are in the process of developing social insurance programs to address the lack of access to paid leave, affordable child care, and long-term services and supports (LTSS). To support the work of policymakers and others interested in addressing caregiving needs, the Academy formed a Universal Family Care (UFC) Study Panel in November 2017, to assess options for funding and administering such programs. In partnership with Caring Across Generations and with support from the Ford Foundation, the Academy completed this major caregiving policy study in 2019, which led to the innovative UFC concept. The Study Panel’s final report was released in June 2019, and continues to inspire and support states’ efforts, such as in Washington State, California, and Minnesota. The concept of UFC is helping inform and shift national policy discussions with ongoing media coverage UFC policy design options as potential solutions to caregiving needs over the life cycle.
