What we aim to solve

THE PROBLEM: Youth sports have been shown to contribute to character and leadership development, positive health and wellness, and long-term improved academic achievement; yet DC's youth sports access and coaching quality are uneven across the city, resulting in missed critical development opportunities for children from high-need communities.

What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

The Fight For Children Institute

The region’s first and only youth sports collaborative that provides responsive grants and capacity building services to sports-based youth development (SBYD) nonprofits. By strategically bringing together these organizations to help them deliver their best work, this collaborative will
unite its work around a common agenda and shared measurements of social-emotional learning outcomes for youth. The 17 nonprofits currently under The Fight For Children Institute’s umbrella provide out-of-school programming across 13 sports different sports, and collectively serve 20,000
children and youth throughout the DMV.

In 2019 we committed $5 million to open The Fight For Children Sports Medicine Center at Children’s National, the only pediatric sports medicine program in the region. The Center, which is scheduled to open in 2021, will help young athletes overcome a wide range of sports-related injuries and
provide quality medical care for over 5,000 children annually.

Charting impact

Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.

FIGHT FOR CHILDREN'S SOLUTION: By supporting organizations working directly with current and aspiring student athletes in high-need communities, and increasing awareness of the benefits associated with youth sports participation, Fight For Children aims to ensure that at-risk student athletes in Washington, DC have the academic, social and emotional, and physical foundation necessary to succeed.

To achieve our goals, we utilize two main strategies:

- Address specific student athlete needs by making grants to worthy non-profits who share our mission
- Raise awareness of (and community commitment to) the the importance of youth sports by convening city leadership, hosting marketing events, and other initiatives.

In addition to our almost 30 year history, Fight For Children has an extremely hard-working and knowledgeable staff. With just 7 staff members, we are able to achieve incredible impact across our nation's capital. Part of our strength is also due to the one-of-a-kind fundraising gala that we host annually. This gala brings in millions of dollars to fund the work we do throughout the year.

Fight For Children recently shifted its mission from early childhood education to youth sports, so our work is just beginning in this space!
