Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
Kennedy Krieger Institute is dedicated to the health and happiness of the children we serve. By providing exceptional health care, facilitating innovative professional education and training, offering special education programs and conducting cutting-edge research, we strive to improve the health of children in Baltimore, across the state, and around the world.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
Since 1937, Kennedy Krieger has advanced its mission through: world class care; advocacy to improve our patients'/children's lives; cutting-edge research to develop new treatments and therapies; and, through education, training the next generation of health care professionals to provide treatment to children and young adults with disorders of the brain. We stay focused on outcome, innovative therapies, education methodologies, and exceptional services for every child and their families. With over 72 programs, in 2015 and again in 2016 we have served upwards of 20,000 children (primarily from Maryland), in both inpatient and outpatient settings and at our three specialized schools (grades K-12).
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
Kennedy Krieger Institute is an internationally recognized Institute dedicated to improving the lives of individuals with disorders of the brain, spinal cord and musculoskeletal system.
By providing services for children with developmental concerns (mild to severe) and with disorders of the brain, the Institute is also home to a team of investigators who are contributing to the understanding of how disorders develop, while pioneering new interventions and earlier diagnosis. Our more than 75 years of experience has given us an unparalleled understanding of developmental disabilities that allows us to care for our patients throughout their lives, ensuring their success at home and in the community. We attract high caliber professionals from specialized fields, some of whom are world renowned.
Through four core areas, we offer comprehensive services to children, families and the community and serve over 20,000 individuals per year. In patient care an interdisciplinary team of specialists works together to evaluate, diagnose, and create individualized treatment plans to guide patients and families throughout all stages of care.
Our innovative research and professional training programs are leading the effort to advance understanding, prevention, and treatment of disorders of the brain. We offer school and hospital-based special education services designed to unlock the potential of each student and share our knowledge with educators everywhere through training and consulting services. Kennedy Krieger Institute is committed to helping people with disorders of the brain achieve their potential and enjoy success in community life by providing access to resources, services, and model programs.
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
Kennedy Krieger Institute continuously takes steps to provide the best possible health care and education services in a safe and welcoming environment for every child and family who enters our doors. We attract the best health care professionals and educators, train the next generation of leaders in the various disciplines, develop innovative therapies, and conduct cutting-edge research. While Kennedy Krieger's mission remains firmly focused in serving children with disorders of the brain, we constantly strive to develop more effective treatments. There is a need for expansion. The Institute is in the process of concluding a capital campaign to build a new downtown building that will bolster outpatient capacity for mental health and autism services. A groundbreaking event is scheduled for October 2016. In 2017 a campaign will be launched to improve our inpatient facilities.
