Youth Programs

Heads Up provides daily, after-school tutoring for elementary and middle school students in seven public schools in DC. Each afternoon the program features 3.5 hours of academic skill building, social development activities, homework assistance and field trips. Over the summer, we serve children six hours a day, five days a week, providing them with a safe place and academic tutoring. We train over 200 undergraduates from six DC universities to be tutors in our program. Through an intensive training program that examines education as tool for social action and youth development in the context of urban poverty, we encourage their development as future community leaders. Heads Up employs one to two parents at each school site to assist with program logistics and serve as a liaison to families in the community.
