What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

Youth Programs--Like most youngsters, children with physical disabilities are full of enthusiasm and energy. At Sun Wheeler Sports, if they happen to use a wheelchair, braces or artificial limb, it attracts no more attention than a reliable pair of tennis shoes. Their disabilities are as varied as the kids themselves, but the children share an insatiable desire to have fun, try new things, and prove their abilities. They are part of the Youth Program, where young people with physical disabilities can enjoy the many activities so readily available to their able-bodied peers. Gaining The Advantage--Fun, fitness, and athletic skill development are obvious benefits, but our Youth Program also builds strength, endurance and coordination--traits that make it easier for a child with a disability to open heavy doors, help with family chores or get dressed independently. Children learn to focus on their abilities and to welcome new challenges, on and off the courts. Equally important, adult athletes with disabilities take part in the program, not only to teach new skills, but also to serve a positive role models. Exposure to grown-ups who have dealt with similar problems helps children develop a strong, positive self-image that will serve them well as they set their own life goals. Team Work--Parents are part of the winning formula in our Youth Program. Children with physical disabilities are often very dependent on their parents. Mom and Dad are also understandably protective of their young ones, especially when a disability is involved. At Sun Wheelers, parental education helps parents support their children, without restraining them. Just as the children learn from interacting with one another, parents gain insight into how other families have dealt with similar challenges and concerns. Equipped to Succeed--Trained staff and volunteers at the Sun Wheelers' Youth Program encourage children to challenge their abilities in a structured, safe environment. The program is centralized in Virginia Beach, Virginia, where the use of the City's public school and recreation centers provide for a fully accessible venue for practices and games. Additional adaptive equipment is available for those potential athletes that currently do not own or possess suitable sporting equipment. The Players--The Sun Wheelers Sports Youth Program is for young people, ages 5 to 18, who have a variety of physical disabilities. Parents are encouraged to contact the Youth Athletes Coordinator for an individual evaluation; since many sports and recreational activities can be adapted to suit even severely disabled children The Youth Program welcomes volunteer participation. For information on the Youth program and current activities contact Sun Wheelers Sports.
