Mission

PIR was incorporated in 1989 by Daniel Brandt and Steve Badrich, who were active in the U.S. student movement during the late 1960s. Brandt began writing software and indexing books in 1982, out of his concern that the major media did a poor job of tracking U.S. covert activities, transnational corporations, global policy elites, and the rich and powerful from the private sector. PIR's database, called "NameBase," was available on floppy disks from 1987-1994, and became searchable on the Internet in 1995.

NameBase

PIR continues to expand NameBase by name-indexing new and old books, as well as clippings. The indexing must be done by reading the book and keying in the names. Despite useful software, this process cannot be automated due to the requirements of name-authority checking, as well as the requirements of copyright law. It is, therefore, extremely labor-intensive. This is also the reason why NameBase is completely unique. PIR maintains a hard copy of everything that has been indexed, and makes photocopies or faxes available to users for a reasonable fee. Almost all of this material has never been digitized, and much of it is sufficiently obscure so that even large public libraries would be unable to furnish a copy.
