Programs and results
What we aim to solve
Sleep apnea is highly preventable and can be reversed if not eliminated through pediatric recognition and dynamic, multi-disciplinary interventions. Based on research conducted with more than 8,000 respondents over the last two years, ASAA has identified the 8 Main Unmet Needs of Sleep Apnea Patients: 1. Lack of Prevention 2. Low Awareness Among The General Public And Health Care Professionals 3. Poor Detection 4. Imperfect Diagnosis 5. Inadequate Treatment 6. Insufficient Coverage Policies 7. Inaccessible Patient-Generated Data Sets 8. Systemic Health Disparities.
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
CPAP Assistance Program
ASAA is a patient-led nonprofit 501(c)(3) formed in 1990 to fight for people with sleep apnea. ASAA’s CPAP Assistance Program (CAP) has provided over 1,400 CPAP equipment packages and over 1,000 masks to patients in need over the last three years. It is our mission to help as many patients as possible get the treatment that they need. No one should go untreated due to financial hardship or other issues.
AWAKE Sleep Apnea Educational Programs
AWAKE stands for Alert, Well, And Keeping Energetic. AWAKE gives people with sleep disorders the tools to manage their own health care successfully through online training, including our AWAKE SleepHealth Support Group and forum, AWAKE curriculum webinars and speaker series, blog posts and newsletters, and patient stories.
SLEEPtember
The annual SLEEPtember® campaign will recognize September as the month to prioritize healthy sleep and to create greater conversations to raise the awareness of the risks of untreated sleep disorders, such as sleep apnea. The initiative encourages the public to take healthy actions. Funding will provide greater awareness and research to improve the outcomes of those affected by sleep disorders.
SleepHealth Study
This was a mobile research study to investigate how your sleep is associated with general health, medical conditions, daytime alertness, and productivity. The study closed on April 23, 2020. Results and publications will be made available when published.
This app was part of an exciting new patient-led effort to use the iPhone and Apple Watch to advance clinical research on sleep and sleep disorders and how they affect other medical conditions. It was also a personalized tool that helps you gain greater insight into your sleep habits and your general health and well-being.
The SleepHealth team consists of the American Sleep Apnea Association, a patient-led, non-profit organization and researchers at the University of California, San Diego.
This study was unique in that it was led by patients and allowed participants to be equal partners in both the monitoring and management of their symptoms and data collected as well as helping to direct future research by participating in our community at www.sleepapnea.org.
AWAKE Peer Mentor Program
Starting in 2020, ASAA implemented a nationwide, virtual support program to provide peer to peer support to new sleep apnea patients, increasing better PAP treatment outcomes. More information can be found at https://www.sleepapnea.org/peer-mentors/join-asaa/.

Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
ASAA is dedicated to promoting research and helping patients have a voice in the future direction of that research to find new treatments, and ultimately cures for sleep apnea.
1. Lack of Prevention. Needed: Proactive and accurate diagnosis of sleep apnea in pediatric and non-typical patients.
2. Low Awareness. Needed: Greater awareness of sleep apnea and co-occurring conditions among the general public and within the healthcare community.
3. Poor Detection. Needed: Early attention to sleep issues in medical school curriculum and more training of healthcare professionals.
4. Imperfect Diagnosis. Needed: Accurate home sleep testing devices. More attention to patient input for innovation.
5. Inadequate Treatment. Needed: Better access to treatments for sleep apnea, fatigue, and excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS).
6. Insufficient Coverage Policies. Needed: Essential changes to medical coverage, reimbursement, and utilization policies to support effective patient care.
7. Inaccessible Patient-Generated Data. Needed: Direct access to patient-generated data from medical devices, and much greater autonomy to control home care devices.
8. Systemic Health Disparities. Needed: Essential changes to the health care ecosystem to achieve a culture of health for all.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
ASAA promotes education and awareness through its popular website (www.sleephealth.org), social media outlets, media interviews, public service announcement campaigns, professional meetings, community presentations and more. All of these campaigns aim to break down the barriers between different patient communities while promoting research and efforts to address the 8 Unmet Needs of Sleep Apnea Patients.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
Our Board of Directors and staff dedicate themselves on a daily basis to our mission and the advancement of our goals. The support of our patient partners, scientific advisory council and other organizations help us educate and grow our community.
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
The American Sleep Apnea Association has provided education to millions of Americans about the signs and symptoms of sleep apnea and has encouraged treatment through an active website and discussion forum, public awareness campaigns, conferences, social media and other community outreach.
ASAA has provided thousands of continuous positive airway pressure machines and supplies to thousands of patients in need that were not able to afford this life-saving medical equipment through its CPAP Assistance Program.
ASAA is working to build an ambitious patient-led research program using data collection and technology to provide screening tools to better diagnosis and treat people with sleep disorders.

- We ask team members to identify racial disparities in their programs and / or portfolios.
- We analyze disaggregated data and root causes of race disparities that impact the organization's programs, portfolios, and the populations served.
- We disaggregate data to adjust programming goals to keep pace with changing needs of the communities we support.
- We seek individuals from various race backgrounds for board and executive director/CEO positions within our organization.
- We have community representation at the board level, either on the board itself or through a community advisory board.
- We engage everyone, from the board to staff levels of the organization, in race equity work and ensure that individuals understand their roles in creating culture such that one’s race identity has no influence on how they fare within the organization.
