What we aim to solve
Uniting for Mental Wellness: A Concert to Heal Through Music and Giving. Healing does not happen in isolation. The true health of a community requires a commitment to supporting the safety and well-being of each resident, both physically and emotionally. That's why Band Together and United Way of the Greater Triangle are joining forces for the 5th year to raise over $1 million and awareness for mental health in the Triangle. This year, the Mighty Giveback benefit concert will support Triangle nonprofits dedicated to making mental healthcare accessible for all. Mental health is a critical concern for our community. By ensuring our community has the resources needed, we can build a stronger, more resilient Triangle.
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
The Mighty Giveback
Band Together is an amazing story full of hope, optimism, and a dose of rebellion. Band Together was imagined by Triangle community leaders as a response to the tragedies of September 11, 2001. The vision has evolved from raising funds to support international tragedies to raising funds and awareness with a special nonprofit partner every year. Thanks to the tireless efforts of thousands of volunteers, generous corporate and individual sponsors, dedicated board members, musicians, and the generosity of our community, Band Together has risen to be a powerful partner to nonprofits in the Triangle Area.
Over 20 years of Band Together, we have:
- Raised $13 million
- Supported 150 nonprofits
- Engaged 2,000 dedicated volunteers
- Entertained 70,000 local concertgoers

Goals & Strategy

Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
Together, we will:
- Raise awareness about mental health challenges
- Increase access to mental healthcare services
- Build a more supportive and inclusive community
- Bring community together through the power of music
- Bring mental health-focused nonprofits together in a powerful collaboration
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
After an extensive vetting process, we select a different nonprofit organization to partner with each year. Only those nonprofits able to steward $1 million effectively are selected. Our success comes from our open source approach. We move in with the partner, open our donor databases and build a plan together to reach our goal.
Another key to our success is effective volunteer management at both the event and board levels. These highly successful community-minded volunteers play significant roles in the day-to-day operations. We have created a volunteer pipeline where we never have to rebuild - we simply reload.
The Band Together team is also adept at raising awareness for our partnering organization's mission. Our network is extensive. Through it, we are able to help our partners develop diverse relationships which enables them to fill in organizational gaps and build capacity.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
We have a loyal donor base of 400 individuals and corporations. We have 60 Community Board members and 16 Board members as well as ~100 event volunteers. We also have a wide variety of media partners and in kind relationships who help us deliver the event and tell our partnership story. Additionally, we are grateful for relationships with the City of Raleigh and State of North Carolina to bolster our efforts.
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
We have strengthened over 150 nonprofit partners in the 20+ years of Band Together. In 2024, we are supporting 5 local nonprofits, all meeting at the intersection of mental health and housing. They include: CASA, InterAct, Village of Wisdom, Healing Transitions, and the Foundation of Hope. Our 2024 Mighty Giveback concert is Saturday, September 21, 2024, co-headlining Black Pumas and Cory Wong, at Red Hat Amphitheater in Raleigh, NC.

Equity strategies
Last updated: 07/15/2024GuideStar partnered with Equity in the Center - an organization that works to shift mindsets, practices, and systems to increase racial equity - to create this section. Learn more
- We review compensation data across the organization (and by staff levels) to identify disparities by race.
- We ask team members to identify racial disparities in their programs and / or portfolios.
- We disaggregate data to adjust programming goals to keep pace with changing needs of the communities we support.
- We employ non-traditional ways of gathering feedback on programs and trainings, which may include interviews, roundtables, and external reviews with/by community stakeholders.
- We have long-term strategic plans and measurable goals for creating a culture such that one’s race identity has no influence on how they fare within the organization.
- We have a promotion process that anticipates and mitigates implicit and explicit biases about people of color serving in leadership positions.
- We seek individuals from various race backgrounds for board and executive director/CEO positions within our organization.
- We have community representation at the board level, either on the board itself or through a community advisory board.
- We help senior leadership understand how to be inclusive leaders with learning approaches that emphasize reflection, iteration, and adaptability.
- We engage everyone, from the board to staff levels of the organization, in race equity work and ensure that individuals understand their roles in creating culture such that one’s race identity has no influence on how they fare within the organization.
