Mission

The School Foundation promotes educational excellence in Florence, SC School District 1 through grants for innovative learning and through high impact initiatives designed to prepare all students for success.

Notes from the nonprofit

To date, The School Foundation has given over $1,355,000.00 in high impact grants to the students of Florence School District One. With the launch of our Start SMART and Start 2 Read programs, we will reach thousands of parents and young children in Florence. It is our belief that learning begins before birth; therefore our StartSMART initiative was designed to give parents in our community the resources they need to prepare their children for kindergarten.

An integral component of the program is our Start 2 Read initiative, which sends a certified early childhood teacher to local businesses to distribute books to the parents/guardians of 1, 2 and 3 year old children. The teacher will share the book, give tips for effective reading aloud and distribute a take-home "reading tips" sheet.

Charting impact

Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.

We would like to see our StartSMART and Start 2 Read initiatives become a model across the state of South Carolina so ALL children will be on track and ready for school. Approximately 400 children receive age appropriate, high quality board books monthly through our Start 2 Read program and parents are educated on dialogic reading.

We hope to maximize grants for future years to better prepare FSD1 students to possess all the skills, knowledge and life and career characteristics as displayed in the profile of the South Carolina Graduate.

To maximize fundraising through our two annual events: Dancing For Our Future Stars and our Annual Gala. This will allow us to optimize grants awarded to FSD1 educators. We continue to fund grants comprised of critical thinking and reasoning; information literacy; collaboration; self-direction; and invention.

Our StartSMART Advisory Council is comprised of local agencies and organizations that serve young families. We strive to maintain and increase number of partners and their involvement with the Council.

We have the program, staff and leadership in place to implement our school readiness initiatives statewide.

We have expanded the Start 2 Read program in numerous businesses and schools across Florence, and have developed the RN Beck Child Development Center. Our original goals were to increase the number of children entering kindergarten with early learning skills, encourage parents to read to their preschool age children daily, provide high quality training for teachers of young children in the Florence area at child care centers, home child care facilities, schools and private education centers, increase the number of high quality child development facilities throughout FSD1, provide child development information to all families with young children, increase community awareness of high quality preschool education at home and at school, and assist businesses as they seek to offer family/children friendly policies. Facilities have been renovated and we have hired a full-time director of school readiness, child care center managers and a full-time parenting specialist. Several programs have been implemented such as Parents as Teachers, Parent/Child Home, and expansion of Child Development classes. This year, we will be expanding beyond Florence into the Pee Dee Region. We are making progress!
